About this product
Full description
If you only buy one compost a year for general garden use — the bag you reach for when planting up tubs, mixing into a new bed, top-dressing borders, or transferring seedlings into bigger pots — it ought to be a properly considered one. Multi-purpose composts get used for so many different jobs that the quality of the blend matters significantly more than most gardeners realise. This Welsh multi-purpose peat-free compost from Dandy's is the proper version of that everyday compost: black, friable, properly balanced, and quietly distinctive in its ingredients.
From Dandy's Topsoil, our trusted bulk-supply partners — specialists in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates. Available in seven sizes from small handy bags right through to a full cubic-metre jumbo.
The Welsh story
Dandy's are a long-established Welsh family business, producing their composts and supplying them across the UK. The "Welsh" in the product name isn't marketing language; it's where the compost is made. Wales, with its temperate climate and strong recycling culture, has been one of the early leaders in proper composted-green-waste production, and Dandy's have been part of that tradition for years.
Crucially, Dandy's took the decision to go 100% peat-free a long time before peat-free composts became commercially common — let alone before they became legally required for retail garden composts in England, as they have been since late 2024. We stock their range partly because they've been quietly doing the right thing for years rather than reluctantly catching up when the law changed.
What makes the blend
Multi-purpose peat-free compost can vary enormously in quality. Cheap blends are often just woody bulk material with very little nutritional substance; better ones use proper organic compost as their base. Dandy's Welsh Multi-Purpose adds something genuinely distinctive:
- Black, friable composted organic material as the base — the kind of well-screened, properly broken-down compost that holds moisture, supports root development, and feels right in the hand
- Slow-release fertilising volcanic stone — a properly unusual ingredient, and one that quietly differentiates this from most peat-free composts. The volcanic stone contains trace elements and minerals that break down slowly over time, feeding plants and improving soil structure gradually. Most multi-purpose composts rely on synthetic slow-release feed; this uses something more elemental
- Peat-free, year-round — not as a compromise, but as the standard
The result is a compost that performs as a planting medium and a soil improver in one bag — which is what "multi-purpose" should mean, but often doesn't.
What it's for
- Potting up — container plants, hanging baskets, window boxes. Use neat or topped with a thin layer of grit for free-draining mixes
- Filling raised beds and new vegetable plots — Dandy's recommend mixing 50:50 with topsoil for the perfect blend; or use neat for an enriched starting medium
- Mixing into existing beds and borders — to enhance soil structure, increase organic matter, and improve drainage and water retention together
- Top-dressing borders — spread a generous layer over established planting in spring or autumn for slow incorporation through the season
- Seed compost for general use (though for fine seeds, a seed-and-cutting-specific compost will give better results)
- Re-potting houseplants — works well as a general houseplant medium for most species, particularly when mixed with a little perlite for extra drainage
Dandy's themselves recommend topping up every 6 months for ongoing plant nutrition — the volcanic stone breaks down at roughly that pace, and a fresh top-up replenishes the slow-release minerals.
Choosing your bag size
Available in seven sizes:
- Jumbo Bulk Bag — approximately 1000 litres (one cubic metre) — the largest, and the genuine best-value per litre
- Standard Bulk Bag — approximately 750 litres — the size most builders' merchants use
- Half Bulk Bag — approximately 500 litres
- 40 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 1000 litres in carry-friendly bags
- 20 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 500 litres in handy bags
- 10 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 250 litres
- 5 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 125 litres — the smallest, for a single project or a few containers
The bulk bags are properly the best value if you have space to receive a pallet and access for it to be dropped. The handy bags are the answer if you have access difficulties — a narrow path, steps, a flat with no garden access — since each 25-litre bag can be carried by hand. The 25-litre handy size is also useful for smaller projects.
A note on weeds in natural compost
Like all properly natural composts, Dandy's don't chemically treat their material to suppress weeds. Their screening process catches most weed material, but small numbers of weed seeds can be present in any naturally produced compost. The honest position: pull weeds when they appear rather than rely on chemical pre-treatment. It's the eco-gardener's trade-off and a fair one.
About Dandy's
Dandy's are our trusted bulk-supply partners — a long-established Welsh family business specialising in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates, supplied direct in bulk and handy bags. We stock their range because they do the unglamorous bulk products properly: well-screened materials, honest descriptions, sensible bag sizes for both serious gardeners and small projects. And because they made the move to 100% peat-free composts well before the law required it.
A small thought: there's a particular satisfaction in using a peat-free compost that genuinely performs — rather than the slightly disappointing "peat-free because we had to" blends that some big brands rushed out when the regulations changed. Dandy's compost is the proper version: properly composted, properly blended with the unusual volcanic-stone feed, properly Welsh in its origins. The kind of compost that does the unfashionable work of just being good compost.
