Dried seed heads — your questions answered

What are seed heads for?

Structure. They give an arrangement something to hold it up and something for the eye to land on when the flowers have gone over — allium and poppy heads as focal points, nigella pods and umbellifers as filler. They are also the backbone of most autumn wreaths.
Will they drop seed indoors?

Poppy heads will, through the vents at the top of the pod. Nigella splits along the seams. Turn them upside down and shake them over a bin before they come in and you will get most of it out in one go.
How long do they last?

Years rather than months, kept dry and out of direct sun. They fade to biscuit and the odd stem gets brittle at the base, but they do not really collapse. Handle them by the stem and not the head.
Can I use them in a wreath?

They are one of the better things for it — light, rigid, and they hold their shape once wired. Wire in small clusters rather than single stems, and put the heaviest heads in first so the ring stays balanced.
