About this product

Full description

There's something rather wonderful about a metal swallow caught mid-dive amongst your verbena, or a dragonfly hovering at hosta height — small permanent reminders of the visitors a cottage garden hopes to attract, and a bit of company on the days they haven't yet arrived. These hand-finished raw steel garden stakes, made in Norfolk by independent maker LV Bespoke, come in nine designs and two heights, designed to weather and rust into a soft patina that lets each piece settle into your planting as if it had always belonged there.

Nine designs to choose from

Each design captures a moment in the natural world that gardeners come to know intimately. The cast versions are heavier and more dimensionally sculpted — the kind of piece you can see clearly from across the garden. The silhouette versions are graphic and elegant, working beautifully as cut-out shapes against soft planting or open sky.

  • Swallow — for the gardeners who watch the skies in late April
  • Dragonfly (silhouette and cast) — particularly lovely near a pond, water trough, or wet planting
  • Butterfly, Butterfly 1, and Butterfly 2 (cast) — three takes on the most visible cottage garden visitor
  • Bee (silhouette and cast) — a quiet acknowledgement of the most important garden worker of all
  • Bird (cast) — a generous, sculpted piece with real presence in a border

Two heights, two uses

  • Tall (1150mm) — stands proud above most herbaceous planting. A focal point amongst grasses, perennials, or against an open sky. Suited to borders where you want a moment of pause as the eye travels across the planting.
  • Short (400mm) — sits within the planting rather than above it. Peeks out from amongst hostas, lower perennials, and container plantings — a small surprise for anyone who looks closely.

Worth noting: the two heights work beautifully together. A tall stake amongst the back of a border with a short one tucked into the front planting creates a visual rhyme that lifts the whole scheme — the same design at two scales reads like a thoughtful repeat rather than a coincidence.

Where they look loveliest

These are at their best when they feel discovered rather than displayed:

  • Tucked between perennials in a soft, naturalistic border
  • Amongst ornamental grasses — miscanthus, stipa, or pennisetum — where the movement of the grass and the stillness of the metal play against each other
  • Beside a water feature, particularly the dragonfly designs
  • In containers as a small focal point amongst trailing or low planting
  • Lining a pathway in a small group, alternating designs and heights
  • In the kitchen garden, where a small bee or butterfly stake adds character without competing for attention

The rust patina

Each stake is supplied in raw, unfinished steel and is designed to develop a natural rust patina over time, particularly when used outdoors. Within a few weeks of weather they begin to take on a warm, mottled rust tone; over months and seasons the patina deepens and softens further. This is intentional, and most owners come to love it — the rust is what allows the piece to feel like a part of the garden rather than something newly dropped into it.

If you'd prefer to keep them looking newer for longer, a clear protective wax or matte lacquer applied on arrival will slow the process considerably. Either choice is valid; the steel will continue doing its quiet work either way.

About LV Bespoke

LV Bespoke is an independent Norfolk maker producing handcrafted metal garden accessories — the kind of beautifully designed objects you used to find in good country garden shops and rarely see now. Each piece is made individually, with care given to weld quality and finish. The raw steel is left unpainted so the work ages naturally — ours and yours both, growing characterful together with the garden around them.

What's included
1 x bird or insect garden stake in your chosen design and height
(raw steel finish, designed to develop natural patina)
Care and use
PLACEMENT:
- Suitable for outdoor garden use - borders, containers, paths
- Push the stake gently into the soil or compost
- Position so the stake stands straight - check after rain or wind

EXPECTED RUST PROGRESSION:
- First few weeks outdoors: surface oxidation begins
- First few months: warm mottled rust tone develops
- Over seasons: deepens into a soft, characterful patina
- This is intentional - the rust is the finish

IF YOU WANT TO SLOW THE RUST:
- Apply a clear protective wax (such as Renaissance Wax) on arrival
- Or apply a matte clear lacquer suitable for outdoor metal
- Reapply annually for sustained protection
- The piece will still patina, just more gradually

WINTER:
- Will weather happily through UK winters
- If you prefer, can be lifted and stored under cover during
prolonged frost
- Heavy snow or ice loads on the stake should be brushed off
gently to avoid bending
