A raised salad bed on legs, with its own cover. Two deep troughs made of Vigoroot fabric sit at a comfortable working height, out of reach of slugs, and a clear poly cover over the top turns the whole thing into a mini greenhouse. Vents at each end let the air through on warm days.
It stands 115cm high, 80cm wide and 33cm deep, and the two troughs hold 17 litres of compost each. The fabric air-prunes the roots, which stops them circling and builds a dense, fibrous root system, so plants do more with less compost than they would in a solid container. A self-watering reservoir keeps the compost evenly moist between waterings.
It's ideal for cut-and-come-again lettuce, rocket, herbs and spring onions by the back door, or for a patio or balcony with no border at all. Give it a sheltered spot, as the cover catches the wind.
