Fabric pots that grow better roots than plastic ones. Vigoroot fabric lets air through the sides, and when a root reaches it the tip stops growing. The plant then branches out with more fine roots instead of circling round the inside of the pot, which is what makes a plant pot-bound.
There are three sizes. The 19cm (5 litres) suits herbs and strawberries; the 24cm (10 litres) takes a chilli, a pepper or a pot of mixed herbs; the 30cm (20 litres) is big enough for a tomato or a young fruit bush. They're made from recycled plastic, fold flat when empty and go again next year.
Being fabric, they dry out faster than a plastic pot in hot weather, so check them more often in summer and stand them on a saucer or tray indoors. They're soft-sided, so lift them from the base once they're full of compost.
