The same grooved cells as the Deep Rootrainers, only 8cm deep. That shallower cell suits plants heading for a hanging basket, a pot or a shallow bed, where a long root is wasted: bedding plants, lettuce and other salads, herbs, onions and small cuttings.
You get 32 cells in eight books, a holding tray and a clear lid. Roots grow straight down the grooves and stop when they reach the air at the base, so the plant makes more roots higher up instead of winding round the edge of the cell. At planting time, open the book and lift the plug out whole, with no tapping or squeezing.
Choose these over the Deep version for quick crops and anything that stays small. For sweet peas, beans and sweetcorn, the Deep Rootrainers are the better choice. Wash them at the end of the season and they'll go again year after year.
