About this variety
The most sculptural dried element in the whole cottage garden — round, textured, pepper-pot seed pods with distinctive star-shaped crowns, on straight tall stems that read as pure architecture. Norfolk-grown from our own Papaver somniferum seed crops, cut when the pods have fully ripened but before they've weathered, and air-dried to hold their pale tan colour and structural form for years of display.
Dried poppy heads are one of those objects that stops feeling like a "flower" and starts feeling like a sculpture. Every capsule is a small architectural marvel: a smooth round pod topped with the star-shaped stigmatic disc that gives the poppy its unmistakable silhouette. In dried form, the muted pale tan colour reads as bone, driftwood, or aged stone against darker backgrounds — and against lighter backgrounds, the fine surface texture and crown detail catches the eye at any distance. Twenty stems in a tall vessel is a real statement.

Our dried Poppy Heads are ripened seed capsules — a cottage garden staple grown widely across the UK for its distinctive papery flowers and its remarkable dried pods. The plants grow tall through summer on our Norfolk cutting field, flower briefly and beautifully, and then set seed in the characteristic round capsules. We cut the pods once they've fully ripened and dried on the plant, before autumn weather softens them, then hang them in our drying barn to complete the process. The result is a firm, structural pod that keeps its shape indefinitely.
A quick note on the plant: Our seed heads are for decorative use only. This is the same species grown by countless UK gardeners, market growers, and dried flower suppliers.
The Colour Story: Fresh from drying, our poppy heads are a warm pale tan — almost cream in bright light, softer greyish-tan in shade. Over time and with normal display exposure, the colour softens further to a slightly warmer, more weathered tone. This is completely natural and, if anything, improves the look for rustic and vintage settings. No dyes, no bleaches, no artificial colouring — the pale tan is simply what dried poppy heads look like.
The Texture: Firm, dense, and structural. The pod shell is smooth to the touch with fine surface texture that catches light. The star-shaped crown at the top is intricate and slightly rough — the detail that distinguishes poppy heads from any other dried seed head. 🍞 A Note on Poppy Seeds
Some seeds may shake out as you handle the bunch, particularly with larger heads. This is normal and expected — not a defect. Keep the bunch upright and handle gently
🛠️ Care & Longevity
Dried poppy heads are among the most stable and long-lasting elements in the whole dried flower range. Well cared for, they last for many years — the pods are firm enough to hold their shape indefinitely and the pale colour is stable.
- Location: Display in a dry environment away from bathrooms, kitchens with steam, or areas of high humidity. The pods are firm but humidity can encourage soft spots or mould over time
- Direct sunlight: Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. The pale tan colour is stable but strong UV will accelerate any softening over months of display. Bright indirect light is fine
- Dust management: Gentle dusting with a soft brush or hairdryer on cool setting keeps the pods clean. The star-shaped crowns catch dust readily — brush more carefully around the intricate detail. Never wash or spray with water
- Handling: Grip firmly by the main stems below the heads. The pods themselves are strong but handling the star-shaped crowns can dislodge the tiny points. Care with the details preserves the sculptural quality
- Seed loss: Some seed shedding is normal, particularly with fresh bunches. To minimise, keep bunches upright when storing.
- Storage between uses: Wrap loosely in tissue paper and keep in a rigid box in a dry cupboard. Store upright rather than laid flat to minimise seed loss. Do not compress the star-shaped crowns
- Long-term: Expect many years of display. Colour may warm very gradually over multiple years; structural integrity remains excellent in dry conditions. These are genuinely heirloom-quality dried elements
