About this variety

The dramatic trailing tassels of Love-Lies-Bleeding in a softer, more muted palette — Norfolk-grown Amaranthus caudatus offered as Seconds at a lower price because the colour has faded slightly from our usual deep crimson. Everything else is the same: the distinctive cascading form, the substantial length, the Norfolk provenance, the chemical-free processing. Just gentler in colour.

These bunches are the same botanical variety we grow for our first-grade Amaranthus stock, harvested from the cutting field at Salle Moor Hall Farm, dried in the old barn without dyes or preservatives. The only difference is that these particular bunches have finished drying with slightly less colour intensity than we typically achieve — a natural variation that happens with air-drying, particularly with bunches from later-season harvests or areas of the field that received slightly more sun exposure before cutting. The cascading shape, the substantial length of the tassels and the textural interest, are all identical to first-grade stock.

💗 What "Seconds" Means

We grade our dried flowers honestly. Our first-grade stock represents our best output — peak colour, ideal form, uniform bunches. Seconds are bunches that don't quite make first-grade standard for one particular reason (in this case, slightly muted colour), but are otherwise identical to first-grade in every way that matters for arrangement work.

We don't dye, bleach, or artificially enhance our dried flowers — ever — which means natural colour variation is a genuine feature of our process. Some bunches finish with deep, vivid tones; some finish softer. Rather than throw the softer bunches away or force them into first-grade at full price, we offer them here at a lower price for customers who value the form and the provenance and are happy with a more muted palette. Same Norfolk field, same barn drying, same hands — just less colour saturation.

Amaranthus caudatus, more commonly and evocatively known as Love-Lies-Bleeding, is a South American annual with one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the entire dried flower world. Every stem produces long, dense, rope-like tassels that cascade downwards under their own weight — sometimes reaching 30-40cm in length — giving the flower a dramatic trailing quality that no other dried variety can match. The plant has been cultivated for its ornamental value since Aztec times, and its combination of unusual form and rich colour has made it a favourite of florists, wedding designers, and cottage gardeners for centuries.

The Cascading Form: The primary reason customers buy Amaranthus, regardless of colour grade, is the extraordinary shape. Each stem carries pendulous tassels made up of hundreds of tiny densely-packed flowers, creating a trailing rope-like effect that hangs beautifully from arrangements, drapes over the edge of vases, and creates dramatic cascading movement in installations. No other dried flower does this — grasses cascade but don't have the density; other flowers have density but not the trailing form. Amaranthus is unique.

The Colour (Seconds Grade): Our Seconds Amaranthus displays a softer, more muted red — think warm terracotta, rust, or dusky rose rather than the deep crimson of our first-grade stock. The colour reads as autumnal, romantic, and slightly faded. In some settings this actually works better than a vibrant red; in others, first-grade stock is the right choice. The Texture: Firm, dense, substantial. The trailing tassels hold their shape well and drape naturally from any arrangement. The individual tiny flowers are packed so densely that the tassels almost feel like fabric.

Well cared for, dried Amaranthus can last for years — the trailing form and firm texture remain stable indefinitely in dry conditions. The colour, which is already softer in Seconds grade, will continue to gently mellow over time.

• Location: Display in a dry environment away from bathrooms, kitchens with steam, or areas of high humidity. Moisture is the main enemy of dried flowers — it can soften the tassels and encourage tiny florets to shed
• Direct sunlight: Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve what colour there is. Seconds Amaranthus is already softer than first-grade — further UV exposure will accelerate ageing. Bright indirect light is fine
• Dust management: The dense tassels can accumulate dust. Gentle dusting with a soft brush or hairdryer on cool setting keeps them clean. Never wash or spray with water
• Handling: Grip firmly by the main stems below the tassels. The stems are strong and safe. Avoid dislodging tiny florets from the tassels — some minor shedding is normal but heavy handling accelerates it
• Cascading display: The trailing form works best when the stems are hung upside down or arranged so the tassels drape naturally. Placing tassels in tight vases compresses their shape and defeats the purpose — use wider vessels or hanging installations to let them cascade
• Storage between uses: Wrap loosely in tissue paper and keep in a rigid box in a dry cupboard. Do not compress the tassels — they need space to keep their shape
