Gaura (now botanically Oenothera lindheimeri) is a **Hardy Perennial** (often treated as short-lived).
The Taproot Factor: It grows a deep taproot which makes it brilliant for dry, sandy soils, but it hates sitting in cold, wet clay in winter. In heavy soil, treat it as a glamorous annual or add plenty of grit.
Top Tip: This is a "First Year Flowering Perennial." If you sow it early in spring (Jan-March), it will bloom beautifully in its first summer, just like an annual!
🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow
Gaura is satisfying to grow but needs warmth to germinate.
Germination:
Sow indoors from February to April. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite (they need light to germinate). Keep warm (approx 20°C). Germination takes 14-21 days.
Where to Sow:
They demand full sun. They thrive in light, well-drained soil. They are the perfect candidate for gravel gardens, sunny banks, or large terracotta pots.
Care While Growing:
They are very low maintenance. You don't need to deadhead individual flowers (they drop off cleanly). If the plant gets too floppy in mid-summer, you can give it a "Chelsea Chop" by cutting it back by a third to encourage bushier new growth.
