How to Use for Lawn Patch Repair
- Prepare the patch — remove any dead grass, weeds, and debris. Rake out loose soil
- Loosen the soil at the edges — use a fork or spade to break up any compacted edges so the new material integrates smoothly with the existing lawn
- Fill the depression — pour Fill & Fix into the patch. For deep holes, add in layers rather than filling all at once
- Level with a rake — spread evenly, slightly proud of the surrounding lawn (it will settle)
- Firm gently — press down with the back of a rake or walk on it lightly to compress the material
- Rake to a fine tilth — break up the surface for a good seedbed
- Sow grass seed — use a lawn seed appropriate to your position (shade, sun, hard-wearing, ornamental) and following seed rate guidance on the packet
- Rake in lightly — gentle raking covers the seed without burying it too deep (3-5mm is right)
- Water thoroughly — a fine spray, not a jet, to avoid washing seed away
- Keep moist — the critical step. Water daily (or more in warm weather) until germination and establishment. Never let the patch dry out during establishment
- Protect from birds — a light netting or fleece keeps birds off newly sown seed for the first two weeks
- Delay mowing — let the new grass reach 5-7cm before its first cut, and cut high (about 4cm) for the first few mowings
