A small steel cup on a slim 1m stake, topped with a ladybird, bee, butterfly, dragonfly or swallow. Fill the cup with water for insects and small birds, or with a little seed, and push the stake into a border or a large pot.
The cup is small, so think of it as a drinking spot for insects and small birds. It empties quickly in hot weather and needs topping up most days in summer. For bees, drop a pebble or two into the water so they have somewhere to land. Seed left in it gets wet when it rains, so only put out what will be eaten in a day or two.
Several dotted through a border look better than one on its own, and a mix of toppers makes a nice little collection. They're mild steel, supplied raw, and rust to a warm brown over a few weeks outside. Rinse the cup every few days to keep it clean for visiting wildlife.
