Calendula 'Snow Princess' Seeds

If you love the toughness of Calendula but find the usual bright oranges too loud for your garden, 'Snow Princess' is the answer. It produces large, semi-double flowers in a soft, buttery cream shade that fades to near-white, often with a contrasting dark brown centre.

This is a tall variety bred specifically for cutting. It produces long, sturdy stems that hold up well in a vase. It creates a calm, elegant feel in the border, mixing beautifully with blues and silvers, while still providing the rugged reliability and pollinator appeal that makes Calendula a garden staple.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Calendula is a Hardy Annual.

It is incredibly easy to grow. 'Snow Princess' is unique for its colour change: the buds open a soft primrose yellow and fade to a creamy white as they mature.

The "Sticky" Stem: You might notice the stems feel slightly sticky to the touch. This is the plant's natural resin (calendulin), which is the ingredient used in healing balms and creams.

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

This is one of the easiest seeds to grow—perfect for first-timers.

Germination:
Sow directly outdoors where they are to flower. For summer blooms, sow March-May. For early spring blooms next year, sow in Autumn (Sept). Cover seeds with 1cm of soil. Germination is rapid (7-10 days).

Where to Sow:
They thrive in **full sun** or partial shade. They are happy in almost any soil, including poor or clay soils. They are drought tolerant once established.

Care While Growing:
Deadhead: This is the golden rule. Remove the flower heads as soon as they fade. This stops the plant making seeds and forces it to produce more flowers for months.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions

The creamy tones of 'Snow Princess' need dark or cool partners to really shine:

  • Cornflower 'Black Ball': The Monochrome Look. The deep, almost black maroon of the cornflower contrasts beautifully with the pale cream of the calendula. It’s a very sophisticated, "black tie" combination.
  • 🌿 Ammi Majus (Queen Anne's Lace): The White Garden. Combining the solid daisy shapes of 'Snow Princess' with the airy, lacy texture of Ammi creates a textured, romantic white border.
