Expected life

Years indoors given proper care - Ammobium is one of the true everlasting flowers with exceptional natural durability. Yellow centres and silvery stem colour are UV-sensitive; keep out of direct sunlight for maximum colour retention.

Why we grow it

  • 6 stems per bunch, 50 to 70cm long
  • Small silvery-white flowers with a yellow centre
  • One of the true everlastings — papery on the plant before cutting
  • Winged stems give texture even where the flowers are hidden
  • Exceptional in an all-white or wedding arrangement
  • Yellow centres fade in strong light, so keep it out of direct sun

About this bunch

Half the interest here is in the stems. Ammobium alatum means winged ammobium, and the name refers to fine papery flanges that run the length of each stem like narrow silver-white wings. They are part of the leaf structure fused to the stem rather than anything added. Combined with the flowers, they give a silhouette you will not find elsewhere in dried work.

The flowers are small white papery buttons, only 1 to 2cm across, dozens to a stem, each with a bright yellow centre. Ammobium is one of the true everlastings, which means the petals are already papery on the living plant and drying only finishes what the flower was doing anyway. That is why it lasts as well as it does with no special handling.

It fills the gap between soft white fillers and structural stems. Most white dried flowers give you texture without line, and this gives you both. Bunches are 6 stems at 50 to 70cm. Both the yellow centres and the silvery stems fade towards pale straw in strong light, so keep it out of direct sun if you want it to hold. Barn-dried at Salle Moor Hall, chemical-free, no dyes. Seasonal, while the summer stock lasts.
