About this variety

Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sensation Dazzler' Cosmos 'Sensation Dazzler'

Large 8–10cm single flowers in an intense, velvety crimson-magenta — a true jewel tone that is neither pure pink nor pure red but something gloriously in between, with a velvet texture that seems to absorb and reflect light simultaneously. 'Dazzler' lives up to its name with blooms that command attention from across the garden.

This is the boldest, most intense Cosmos in the range. While most Cosmos lean soft and romantic, 'Sensation Dazzler' is pure drama — a deep, saturated crimson-magenta jewel tone with velvety surface texture that almost glows in summer sun. Tall on architectural stems (120–150cm — among the tallest Cosmos available), with the characteristic airy Cosmos foliage moving gracefully in every breeze. Bred as part of the legendary "Sensation" series specifically for cutting, with large flower size, strong stems and long vase life (7–10 days when cut at the right stage). Half-hardy annual flowering July to first autumn frosts. RHS Plants for Pollinators recognised — particularly valuable as late-summer nectar source.

A note on growing

The Cosmos "starvation rule" is essential: do not feed. In rich soil 'Dazzler' produces colossal foliage and few flowers; in poor lean soil it flowers prolifically. This is non-negotiable.

Sow indoors from March to April at 18–22°C. Surface-sow as Cosmos seeds need light to germinate. Germination 7–14 days. Pot on and harden off. Plant out only after all risk of frost (late May/June) in full sun and lean well-drained soil. At 120–150cm tall, 'Dazzler' may need support in exposed gardens — install bamboo canes or pea sticks early. Pinch out the growing tip at 15–20cm for bushy multi-stemmed growth. Cut stems in early morning when buds are just beginning to open, strip lower foliage, and expect 7–10 day vase life.

Where it shines

At the back of cottage borders where the 120–150cm height provides architectural drama and a natural seasonal screen for fences or other eyesores. In the cutting garden as a high-impact statement flower — the intense colour is unmatched in the Cosmos range. In hot, warm-toned borders amongst reds, oranges and yellows. As a contrast plant, where the deep crimson-magenta creates electric pairings with whites, pinks, lime greens or warm golds. In wildlife gardens, where the late-summer nectar value is genuinely important.

Plant alongside

For maximum colour drama, pair 'Dazzler' with the pure white of Cosmos 'Purity' — the crimson reads even more vividly against luminous white, and the combination is a classic cutting-garden standard. For airy contrast, the lacy white of Ammi majus provides a soft meadow-style backdrop that keeps the display feeling fresh. For warm-tone harmony, combine with Calendula 'Touch of Red' and Cornflower 'Red Boy' for an electric warm cottage palette.
