Star-shaped almond-scented flowers in violet-blue and indigo with crisp white star centres — the Fleuroselect-Medal Phlox that looks like constellations landed in your garden.
About this variety
Star-shaped flowers in violet-blue and deep indigo, each with a crisp white star marked at the centre, on upright wiry stems at 30 to 40cm. A drift of them does genuinely look like a scattering of small stars in the foliage. It holds a Fleuroselect medal.
There is an almond scent, subtle and most obvious in warm evening air, which is a quiet extra rather than the reason to grow it.
Like 'Blushing Bride' this is annual phlox, compact and upright rather than the tall perennial border sort, and it flowers heavily from midsummer to the first frost before finishing for good.
The seed needs total darkness to germinate, which is the opposite of most cottage annuals and where most failures come from. Cover it with about 5mm of compost and keep the tray under card or black plastic until the shoots show, then move it straight into good light. Deadhead regularly or the season shortens. It wants moist but well-drained ground of reasonable fertility, in sun or light shade.
