Gypsophila 'Covent Garden' Seeds
If you have ever wondered why florist bouquets look so light and airy, the secret is Gypsophila. 'Covent Garden' is the superior annual strain, producing much larger, brighter white flowers than the perennial types. It forms a mist of pure white, open-faced blooms on slender, branched stems.
This is a "workhorse" plant. It grows incredibly fast (blooming in as little as 6-8 weeks from seed) and provides the perfect neutral backdrop for almost any other flower. Whether softening bold Zinnias or adding romance to Sweet Peas, no vase is complete without a sprig of 'Covent Garden'.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Gypsophila elegans 'Covent Garden' is a Hardy Annual (H3). Unlike creeping perennial varieties, this florist’s favourite is built for rapid height and massive flower production, completing its entire life cycle in just one UK summer season.
The Successional Secret: Because this variety puts immense energy into flowering very quickly, a single plant will usually finish blooming after 4-5 weeks. To maintain a constant supply of white "mist" from June until the first frosts, we recommend sowing a small pinch of seeds every three weeks throughout the spring.
Pollinator Support: Despite the delicate appearance, the flowers are a magnet for biodiversity. Their simple, open structure provides easily accessible nectar for small solitary bees and hoverflies, making them an essential part of any wildlife-friendly cottage garden.
🌱 Growing Guide
Gypsophila is famously easy to grow, provided its preference for undisturbed roots and sun is respected.
How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in September for earlier flowers the following spring. Scatter the seeds thinly onto a finely raked surface and cover very lightly with soil. Germination is rapid, usually occurring within 10-14 days.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun to prevent the stems from becoming floppy and sparse. They thrive in most well-drained UK soils but have a legendary love for alkaline (chalky) conditions. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding a small amount of garden lime to the sowing area will result in much stronger, healthier plants.
Ongoing Care:
Once established, annual Baby's Breath is remarkably low-maintenance. In particularly windy or exposed gardens, you can place a few twiggy birch or pea sticks among the young plants; they will grow through the twigs, which will provide a discreet, natural framework to keep the flower clouds upright for cutting.
