Slugs work at night and underground, which is why they are so hard to catch in the act and why surface treatments so often disappoint. These are microscopic beneficial nematodes of the genus Phasmarhabditis, watered into pots or open ground, that hunt slugs where they actually spend their time.
The nematodes enter the slug through a hole in its back and it dies within a few days, underground and out of sight. That last part matters more than it sounds. There are no dead slugs on the path in the morning and nothing for a hedgehog, bird or pet to eat, which is the main practical advantage over pellets.
Slugs are worth understanding if you are going to spend money on controlling them. A cubic metre of garden soil holds up to 200 of them. They live below ground through the day and come up to feed after dark, following their own scent trails back home. A single grey field slug has the potential for 90,000 grandchildren. Damp spells are when the damage happens, and seedlings and cuttings are what suffer most.
Soil temperature must be above 5°C. This pack treats 40 square metres, and a repeat application every six weeks keeps numbers down through the season.
