Scabious 'Black Knight' Seeds

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Black Knight' is a Hardy Annual (H4). It is a high-performing "workhorse" of the cottage garden, completing its entire life cycle in a single season while showing surprising resilience to typical British weather.

Floral Architecture: The blooms are composed of a dense, dark central cushion surrounded by delicate outer petals. The contrasting white anthers (the "pins") create a shimmering effect against the deep maroon velvet backdrop.

Biodiversity Star: Listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, it is an absolute magnet for bees and butterflies. Its flat-topped structure provides the perfect landing platform for pollinators to forage throughout the summer.

Scabious are robust and easy to grow, provided they are given maximum sunlight and excellent drainage.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to April for early blooms, or in September to overwinter for even stronger plants next year. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover with a very light dusting of vermiculite—seeds require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C; seedlings typically appear in 10-14 days. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors in May once the soil has warmed.

Where to Plant:
Plant out in late May in full sun. They thrive in neutral to alkaline (chalky) soil. If you have heavy clay, add grit to the planting hole, as they will rot if their roots sit in winter-wet soil.

Ongoing Care:
Support the 90cm stems early in the season with twiggy sticks or netting to prevent them from flopping in summer storms. Deadhead regularly to prevent the plant from setting seed; this signals the plant to keep producing new "pincushions" until the first frosts of November.
