Pansy 'Swiss Giant Ullswater' Seeds
'Ullswater' is a heritage variety of the famous Swiss Giant pansy series, prized for its large, open blooms and incredible colour saturation. The petals are a rich, velvety indigo-blue, centered with a deep black "face" or blotch that gives the flower real personality.
This is the ultimate plant for bridging the gap in the gardening year. It is incredibly hardy, designed to bloom through cool autumns, mild winters, and explode into life in spring. Whether planted in terracotta pots, hanging baskets, or along the edge of a path, it provides a jewel-like sparkle when the rest of the garden is dormant.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Pansies (*Viola x wittrockiana*) are usually grown as Biennials.
The Two Seasons:
For Winter/Spring Flowers: Sow in Summer (June-Aug). The plants establish before winter and flower during mild spells and heavily in spring.
For Summer Flowers: Sow in Spring (Feb-April). They will bloom from early summer onwards.
Top Tip: Unlike smaller Violas, 'Swiss Giant' pansies have large heads. To keep them looking good, pinch off the dead flowers regularly to stop them setting seed.
🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow
Pansy seeds need darkness and cool temperatures to germinate.
Germination:
Sow indoors or in a cold frame. Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost and cover completely with soil or vermiculite to exclude light. Keep cool (15-18°C)—if it's too hot, they won't grow. Germination takes 14-21 days.
Where to Sow:
They thrive in sun or partial shade. They prefer cool, moisture-retentive soil. In the height of summer, a little shade prevents the colours from fading.
Care While Growing:
Water regularly in containers. Pansies are hungry plants—feed them with a liquid fertiliser every few weeks during flowering to keep the blooms coming.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions
The deep indigo of 'Ullswater' needs bright partners to lift the darkness:
- 🟡 Wallflower 'Cloth of Gold': The Spring Contrast. If growing for spring colour, plant 'Ullswater' at the feet of yellow Wallflowers. The blue and yellow are complementary colours, creating a classic, vibrant display.
- ☁️ Forget-me-not 'White': The Frosty Look. Mixing deep blue Pansies with pure white Forget-me-nots creates a cool, crisp, and sophisticated border that looks wonderful on a frosty morning.
