Dried Nigella Seed Heads

Nigella damascena (Love-in-a-mist) is famous for its blue summer flowers, but for many gardeners, the real prize comes afterwards. As the petals fall, the centre of the flower swells into a magnificent, inflated seed pod that looks like a miniature hot air balloon or a paper lantern.

These dried stems capture that architectural beauty perfectly. The pods are a natural mix of pale green, straw-gold, and deep burgundy stripes, often surrounded by the dried, spidery "mist" foliage. They add incredible volume and texture to arrangements, bridging the gap between heavy seed heads and delicate grasses.

🌿 About these Pods

These are the seed capsules of the Love-in-a-mist plant. We harvest them in late summer when the pods are fully swollen and the stripes have developed their rich colour. They are air-dried to preserve their shape.

The Rattle: Like poppy heads, these pods are full of tiny black seeds. When you handle the bunch, you'll hear the gentle, soothing sound of the seeds rattling inside the papery shell.

🎨 Styling Ideas

Nigella pods are incredibly versatile in floral design:

  • Volume Builder: Use them to bulk out a bouquet. Their round shape fills gaps beautifully without looking heavy or dense.
  • Wreaths: They are lightweight and easy to wire, making them perfect for autumn door wreaths where you want texture and interesting shapes.
  • Festive Decor: The smooth, papery surface takes spray paint incredibly well. Spray them silver or gold for instant Christmas baubles on a stick!

Perfect Dried Companions

Create a rustic country arrangement by pairing Nigella with these textures:

  • 🌾 Dried Wheat: The Golden Glow. The warm, golden tones of wheat stalks contrast beautifully with the cool, greenish-purple tones of the Nigella pods.
  • 💜 Dried Statice: The Colour Pop. The purple or blue varieties of Statice pick up the burgundy stripes on the Nigella pods, creating a cohesive, designed look.

⚠️ Seeds Inside
These pods are full of seeds! While they are sealed naturally, vigorous shaking or tipping them upside down might release a few black seeds. We recommend giving them a gentle shake outdoors before arranging.

🌿 Care & display tips
Keep your dried flowers out of direct sunlight and away from damp — both will fade and soften the stems over time. No water needed. Arrange loosely in a vase or tie with twine for a hanging display. Handle gently as dried stems can be brittle.
💐 Using in arrangements
Dried flowers work beautifully with other dried stems, pampas grass, and seed heads. If using in a wreath or floral foam, wire the stems first for extra security. For wedding work, we recommend ordering a little extra to allow for any breakage during handling.
📬 Delivery & packaging
Dried flowers are packed carefully in a rigid box to protect the stems in transit. Dispatched within 2–3 working days. All packaging is compostable or recyclable. Free delivery on orders over £30.
