Malva 'Zebrina' Seeds

Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina' is a vigorous Short-Lived Perennial (H5) often grown as a hardy annual. Capable of surviving typical UK winters, it usually remains productive for 2-3 years, though it is such a prolific self-seeder that you will likely have a permanent colony once established.

Zebra Stripes: The defining feature of this variety is the intense maroon-purple veining on lilac petals. This pattern serves as a natural "nectar guide," directing pollinators straight to the centre of the bloom.

Rapid Maturity: Unlike traditional biennials that take two years to flower, Malva 'Zebrina' is remarkably fast. If sown early in the spring, it will reach its full height and bloom profusely in its very first summer.

Zebra Mallows are tough, adaptable plants that are exceptionally easy to raise from seed.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to May or directly outdoors in May/June. If sowing indoors, use individual pots to minimize root disturbance. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover with a light dusting of vermiculite. Keep at 15-20°C; germination usually takes 14-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They thrive in full sun or partial shade. They are remarkably unfussy about soil types and will grow happily in heavy clay or poor, dry soil, provided there is reasonable drainage. Their robust nature makes them ideal for the back of a border or a wilder corner of the garden.

Ongoing Care:
The Mid-Summer Chop: If the plant begins to look tired or "leggy" after its first flush of flowers in July, shear it back by about half. Water it well, and it will quickly reward you with fresh, lush foliage and a second wave of striped blooms for the autumn.
