Morning Glory 'Heavenly Blue' Seeds

'Heavenly Blue' is arguably the most beautiful climber you can grow from seed. It is a vigorous, twining vine that covers itself in huge, saucer-shaped trumpet flowers (up to 10cm across) in an intense, clear shade of azure-blue with a creamy white throat.

True to its name, this plant greets the day. The buds unfurl into spectacular blooms in the morning sun, fading gently as the afternoon heat sets in, only to be replaced by hundreds of fresh new flowers the next morning. It is the perfect "screen" plant—fast-growing, lush, and capable of covering a trellis, arch, or ugly fence in a matter of weeks.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Ipomoea is a Half-Hardy Annual.

It originates from the tropics (Mexico/Central America), so it loves heat and cannot survive frost. It completes its entire life cycle—climbing up to 3 metres!—in just one summer.

Top Tip: This is a twiner, not a clinger. It needs something thin to wrap around (like netting, twine, or cane), rather than a flat wall.

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

Ipomoea seeds have a hard coat, so they need a little help to wake up.

The Soak Trick: Before sowing, soak the seeds in tepid water overnight (12-24 hours). This softens the shell and speeds up germination significantly.

Germination:
Sow indoors from March to April. Sow 1cm deep in individual pots (they hate root disturbance). Keep warm (20-25°C). Germination takes 7-14 days.

Where to Sow:
Plant out in June when all risk of frost has passed. They need a warm, sunny, sheltered wall or fence. They are thirsty plants, so mulch well to lock moisture into the soil.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions

Pair this climber with plants that offer contrasting colours or evening interest:

  • Cobaea scandens (Cup & Saucer Vine): The Day & Night Duo. Morning Glory blooms in the morning, while Cobaea flowers last well into the evening. Growing them on the same trellis ensures your vertical space has colour all day long.
  • 🔥 Rudbeckia 'Marmalade': The Complementary Clash. Plant golden-orange Rudbeckia at the base of your blue Morning Glory vine. The Orange/Blue contrast is electric and classic "Van Gogh" styling.
