About this product
Full description
The natural, chemical-free way to keep pests off your fruit and vegetables. Fruit and Veg Protection Nematodes from Ladybird Plant Care combine two species of beneficial parasitic nematodes (Steinernema feltiae and Steinernema carpocapsae) into a single multi-target treatment that controls a properly wide range of common UK garden pests — codling moth, caterpillars, root fly, gooseberry sawfly, asparagus beetle larvae, wireworm, sciarid fly, and viburnum beetle larvae among others. Safe for bees, ladybirds, pets and children. Properly the gardener's organic pest control workhorse.
From Ladybird Plant Care, our trusted partner specialising in biological pest control. Live nematodes are despatched fresh from their facility direct to your door — not held in stock; ordered in fresh for each customer.
What nematodes actually are — and why they work
Nematodes (also called roundworms) are microscopic, soil-dwelling organisms naturally present in healthy garden soil. The beneficial species used in biological pest control hunt down and parasitise specific pest insects without harming anything else. The process is properly elegant:
- The nematodes are mixed with water and applied to the soil with a watering can or hose
- Once in the soil, they actively seek out pest larvae, caterpillars and grubs in the soil and on plant surfaces
- They enter the pest through natural openings (mouth, breathing pores, anus)
- Once inside, they release symbiotic bacteria that liquefy the pest from within
- The pest dies within 24–48 hours; the nematodes reproduce inside and emerge to seek further pests
- When pest populations are reduced, the nematodes themselves die back to a natural background level — no ongoing chemical residue, no accumulated environmental impact
Because the nematodes are properly specific to certain pest groups, they leave bees, butterflies, ladybirds, hoverflies, beetles, and all the other beneficial insects completely alone. Safe for pets, children, and edible crops.
Why a multi-species mix matters
Single-species nematode products target one or two specific pests. The Fruit and Veg Protection mix combines two complementary species, each suited to different pest types:
- Steinernema feltiae — the soil-and-surface specialist. Works at temperatures from 5°C upwards, making it useful through cooler shoulder seasons. Particularly effective against smaller pests and those that live in soil or on the soil surface — sciarid fly, shore fly, root fly larvae, leaf miners, small caterpillars
- Steinernema carpocapsae — the active hunter. Needs slightly warmer conditions (10°C+) but moves rapidly through soil and onto plant surfaces in search of larger, mobile pests — codling moth larvae, caterpillars, sawfly larvae, asparagus beetle larvae, viburnum beetle, wireworm
Together, they cover a properly broad spectrum of fruit and vegetable pests with a single application. For most home gardeners growing a mixed kitchen garden, this is the right starting point — one treatment, many pests handled.
The pests it controls
The multi-target mix is genuinely useful against:
- Codling moth — the classic apple pest; larvae burrow into ripening fruit. Apply around fruit trees and at soil level. (For dedicated apple-tree treatment we also stock Codling Moth Nematodes — concentrated for that single pest)
- Cabbage white caterpillars and other brassica pests — reduces caterpillar populations significantly
- Root fly larvae — cabbage root fly, carrot root fly, onion fly. Underground grubs that destroy roots
- Gooseberry sawfly — the caterpillars that strip gooseberry and currant bushes
- Asparagus beetle larvae — soil-dwelling stages that damage asparagus crowns
- Wireworm — the click beetle larvae that bore holes in potatoes and root crops
- Viburnum beetle larvae — defoliators of ornamental viburnum shrubs
- Sciarid fly — fungus gnats in greenhouse compost and houseplant soil
- Shore fly — greenhouse pest similar to sciarids
- Leatherjackets — crane fly larvae in soil
- Cutworms — surface-dwelling soft caterpillars that fell young seedlings
- Vine weevil (limited effect — for serious vine weevil pressure, use a dedicated Heterorhabditis nematode product)
For lawn pests (chafer grubs, leatherjackets in lawn) reach for our Chafer Bug Nematodes instead. For pavement and patio ants, our Ant Control Nematodes are the targeted answer.
How to apply
Application is straightforward but the conditions matter for effective results:
- Soil temperature: S. feltiae works from 5°C; S. carpocapsae from 10°C. For best results from the mix, soil temperature should be 10°C or above (typically late March/early April onwards in southern England, slightly later in the north)
- Soil moisture: soil must be moist before application — water the area thoroughly the day before if needed
- Mix with water: dissolve the nematode powder in water as instructed on the packet
- Apply via watering can or hose attachment: deliver to the soil surface around target plants, not on the foliage
- Water in immediately: nematodes are killed by direct UV light; cover by watering in straight after application
- Apply in the evening or on overcast days: best timing avoids direct sunlight while the nematodes establish
- Repeat every 2–3 weeks during peak pest pressure (May to September) for ongoing protection
Detailed application instructions for each pest type are in the official instruction PDF — worth reading before first use.
Pack sizes — choose by garden size
Each pack treats 60 square metres of garden. Choose by the total area you need to cover:
- 1 x 60 sqm pack — £9.00. The right choice for a small-to-medium kitchen garden, a fruit cage, an allotment plot, or focused application around fruit trees. Roughly a half-allotment or a 6m × 10m vegetable area
- 2 x 60 sqm packs — £16.00 (saves £2). For larger allotments, multi-bed kitchen gardens, or one application across vegetables AND fruit trees together. Roughly 120 sqm of treated area
- 3 x 60 sqm packs — £23.00 (saves £4). The best per-pack value, suited to larger gardens, smallholdings, multi-allotment growers, or for two applications across the season on a medium garden
For most home kitchen gardens, the single pack covers a season's needs. Active allotments, orchards or large vegetable plots benefit from the multi-pack value.
Why nematodes are properly the right answer
- Properly target-specific — the nematodes only affect the pests they're suited to. Bees, butterflies, ladybirds, hoverflies, lacewings, ground beetles, earthworms — all completely unharmed
- Safe for edibles — you can harvest and eat produce the same day as application. No chemical residue, no withdrawal period
- Safe for pets and children — nematodes are naturally occurring soil organisms. No safety concerns for outdoor use
- No resistance buildup — pests can't evolve resistance to a biological parasite the way they do to chemical insecticides
- Self-limiting — when pest numbers drop, nematode populations naturally die back. No long-term environmental accumulation
- Approved for organic gardening — biological controls are the proper foundation of any organic system
- Works while you sleep — once applied, the nematodes do the work continuously, day and night, while pests are present
Where nematodes fit in our organic pest control approach
Biological controls like nematodes are one of the cornerstones of our Gardening Without Chemicals approach. The complete organic pest management picture:
- Soil pests — multi-target (codling moth, caterpillars, root fly, sawfly, wireworm, etc.) → Fruit and Veg Protection Nematodes (this)
- Apple tree codling moth — targeted → Codling Moth Nematodes (concentrated single-species)
- Lawn grub problems → Chafer Bug Nematodes
- Ant infestations → Ant Control Nematodes
- Above-ground soft-bodied pests (aphids, whitefly, mites) → Ecoworm Potassium Soap
- Physical pest exclusion (butterflies, birds, root fly) → Garland Plant Protection Fleece
- Pollinator support → Plants for Pollinators range + bird feeders + bee drinker
- Healthy soil → peat-free composts from Dandy's
Together these form a properly integrated organic gardening approach — the pollinators are encouraged, the beneficial insects protected, the pests handled biologically rather than chemically, and the soil treated with organic inputs.

A small thought: there's a particular satisfaction in opening up a perfect, unblemished apple in late summer and knowing it isn't perfect because it's been sprayed with chemicals — it's perfect because of the unseen work of microscopic allies in the soil. Nematodes are properly invisible: you'll never see them, you'll never need to think about them again after applying. But the apples are perfect, the brassicas are eaten by you rather than the caterpillars, and the bees that visit the flowers in the same garden are completely unharmed. That's organic gardening done properly — not by avoiding pest control, but by choosing the kind of pest control that works with nature rather than against it.
