Coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' Seeds
Usually, growing perennials from seed requires patience, as they spend the first year growing leaves and only flower in year two. 'Early Sunrise' breaks all the rules. It is famous for blooming just 11-12 weeks after sowing, giving you a summer of golden colour in its very first year.
The flowers are stunning—semi-double, ruffled globes of rich, sunny yellow that sit atop neat, compact mounds of greenery. It is a tough, sun-loving plant that laughs at drought and poor soil, making it perfect for containers or sunny borders where you want reliable, low-maintenance cheer.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Coreopsis is a Short-Lived Perennial.
It will survive the winter and bloom for 2-3 years. Because it expends so much energy flowering in its first year, it sometimes acts more like a Hardy Annual or Biennial.
The Name "Tickseed": You might see this name on the packet. It refers to the seeds (Coreopsis comes from the Greek for "bug-like"), which look like tiny beetles. Don't worry, the plant doesn't attract ticks!
🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow
For flowers in the first year, you must start them early.
Germination:
Sow indoors from February to April. Sow onto the surface of moist compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite (they need light to germinate). Keep at 20°C. Germination takes 14-21 days.
Where to Sow:
They demand full sun. They tolerate poor, dry, or sandy soil. Heavy, wet clay in winter will kill them, so ensure drainage is good.
Care While Growing:
Deadhead: This is crucial. If you snip off the faded flower heads, 'Early Sunrise' will bloom continuously from June to October. If you leave them, it stops flowering to make seeds.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions
The bright yellow of Coreopsis needs cool blues or purples to create contrast:
- 💜 Salvia viridis 'Blue': The Contrast. The upright, indigo-blue bracts of the Salvia look incredible rising above the rounded yellow mound of the Coreopsis.
- 🌸 Echinacea purpurea: The Daisy Duo. Plant these two drought-tolerant perennials together for a classic, pollinator-friendly prairie look. The pink and yellow work surprisingly well together.
