About this product

Full description

Some garden ornaments are decorative; some are functional; this one is properly both. Five steel cups (or solid balls — your choice) emerge on slim stalks from a single base stake, like a small bouquet held still mid-bloom. The balls are quietly handsome, ageing with the rust patina into something traditional and grounded. The cups do something more interesting — catch rainwater, hold a few seeds for visiting birds, sit a tealight on summer evenings, or simply work as small open shapes that change with the light.

From LV Bespoke, our trusted Norfolk maker — supplied in raw steel, designed to weather and rust into a soft patina that lets the piece settle into your garden as if it had always belonged there. Available in two heights and a choice of cups or balls.

Cups or balls — choosing between them

You'll choose one or the other when ordering — five matching cups, or five matching balls. The two designs read very differently:

  • Balls — five solid steel spheres on stalks. Quieter, more traditional, more sculptural. The light plays across the surface as the rust patina develops, giving the piece visible depth from a distance. The right choice for formal gardens, traditional cottage settings, or anywhere you want a calm focal point
  • Cups — five small open hemispheres on stalks. More dynamic, more interactive, slightly more whimsical. The cups can be left empty (lovely as they are), or used to:
    • Catch rainwater — small dishes for thirsty insects, particularly bees and butterflies on hot days
    • Hold birdseed or fat treats — for blue tits, robins and other small visitors
    • Sit a tealight on summer evenings — particularly magical at dusk in a quiet corner of the garden
    • Display small seasonal arrangements — a sprig of holly at Christmas, a posy of daisies in June, a cluster of acorns in autumn

If you can't decide: balls if you want a quieter sculptural feature, cups if you want something the garden's wildlife can actually use.

Two heights, two uses

  • Small — approximately 750mm — knee to thigh height. Sits amongst planting rather than above it. The right scale for tucking into a herbaceous border, in containers, or somewhere the piece is discovered rather than displayed
  • Large — approximately 1150mm — well above most border planting. A proper above-the-foliage focal point that reads from across the garden. The right scale for a back-of-border statement, a courtyard centrepiece, or a marker by a path or sitting spot

The two heights aren't just bigger and smaller versions of the same piece — they do quite different jobs. Worth thinking about whether you want the cluster as a hidden surprise (small) or a clear focal point (large) before choosing.

Where it looks loveliest

Some thoughts depending on which size and style you've chosen:

  • Small cups version — particularly lovely amongst a wildflower or cottage garden border, where the cups can quietly do double duty as bee water dishes during summer dry spells
  • Small balls version — tucked into a herbaceous border at low level, peeking through hardy geraniums, lady's mantle or low salvias
  • Large cups version — at the back of a border or as a path-side marker, where you can drop a tealight in each cup for evening dinners outside
  • Large balls version — the most formal of the four combinations. Works beautifully in a gravel garden, courtyard, or as a sculptural focal point amongst grasses
  • By a sitting spot or bench — where the cluster gives the eye something to settle on, particularly beautiful on summer evenings if you've gone with the cups + tealight option
  • In a courtyard or paved garden — the rust patina works particularly well against weathered stone, brick or gravel

The rust patina

The steel is supplied raw and designed to develop a natural rust patina over time. Within a few weeks outdoors it'll begin to take on a warm, mottled rust tone; over months and seasons it deepens into something rather lovely — the kind of texture that feels rooted in your garden rather than imposed onto it.

If you'd prefer to slow the rusting process, a clear protective wax or matte lacquer applied on arrival will hold off the patina considerably. Most owners come to love the natural ageing — particularly on the cups version, where the rust contrasts beautifully against any tealight or dried-flower contents.

  • Cluster of 3 Glass/Marble Garden Features — three separate tall stakes (1500mm) in your choice of glass-sphere finish
  • 3D Orb Decorative Garden Stake — single tall stake with embedded 3D designs

About LV Bespoke

LV Bespoke is a small family business based in North Norfolk, hand-making garden features in their own workshop. They've exhibited at RHS shows and Gardeners' World Live, and were commissioned by the King's estate at Sandringham in 2022 to create a "Sea of Crowns" installation as part of Sandringham In Bloom — properly serious provenance for a small Norfolk maker. Each piece is made by hand in raw steel, designed to do its job quietly, age gracefully, and look like it belongs. We're proud to stock their work; objects with this kind of character don't come from factories, they come from somebody's careful hands.

A small thought: the loveliest garden ornaments earn their place over years. They settle in, the rust deepens, the surrounding planting grows up to meet them, and gradually they become part of the place rather than an addition to it. Cups or balls, tall or short — what you're really choosing here is a small piece of stillness in your garden. Something to find. Something to age alongside.
