Cerinthe major 'Purpurascens' Seeds

Cerinthe is a plant that stops people in their tracks. It has a unique, "underwater" beauty, with fleshy, silver-blue leaves that spiral up the stem, gradually turning into deep, inky violet-purple bracts at the top.

From these purple bracts hang clusters of rich purple-yellow bells that are filled with nectar. This plant is known as "Honeywort" for a reason—it is an absolute obsession for bees. If you want to bring life, movement, and a humming sound to your garden, this is the single best annual you can grow.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Cerinthe is a Hardy Annual.

It originates from the Mediterranean, so it loves sun but is surprisingly tough. It grows rapidly in spring, flowers early, and sets large black seeds that drop to the ground.

The "Shrimp" Shape: You might hear it called the "Blue Shrimp Plant." This refers to the arching shape of the flower heads, which curl over like the tail of a shrimp!

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

The seeds are large (like black beads) and easy to handle.

Germination:
Sow indoors in spring (Feb-April) or directly outdoors in Autumn (Sept) or Spring (April-May). Soak the seeds in tepid water for 12 hours before sowing to soften the hard coating. Sow 1cm deep. Germination takes 7-14 days.

Where to Sow:
It needs full sun to develop the best purple colouration. In shade, it stays mostly green. It thrives in well-drained, even poor soil.

Care While Growing:
It is drought tolerant once established. It can get top-heavy, so planting them in a group allows them to lean on each other for support.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions

Cerinthe's moody purple and silver tones look incredible with bright, zesty partners:

  • 🧡 Calendula 'Indian Prince': The Contrast. The deep mahogany and orange of the Calendula creates a stunning clash with the cool purple-blue of the Cerinthe. It’s a very modern, "jewel box" look.
  • 🌷 Tulips (for Spring sowing): The Bedding Partner. If you sow Cerinthe in autumn, it will flower in late spring alongside your Tulips. The silver foliage is the perfect foil for dark purple or white tulips like 'Queen of Night'.
