The proper wild Mediterranean rocket, not the milder salad rocket that fills supermarket bags. A different species entirely, with narrower, deeply cut leaves and a far more serious peppery kick that builds slowly and finishes with a hint of bitterness.
This is rocket for people who want rocket to taste of something. It stands up to roast beef and parmesan without vanishing, turns a sliced tomato into something worth eating, and gives an Italian salad its proper character.
Being perennial changes how you grow it. One sowing crops through summer, survives the winter, and comes again the following spring from the same crown — two or three years from a single packet. Let it self-seed into gravel and path edges and it looks entirely at home there.
