What basic tools does every garden need?

For most gardens, the essentials are: a good pair of secateurs, a hand trowel, a hand fork, a watering can with rose, a sturdy garden fork or spade depending on soil, and gardening gloves. Add a kneeling pad and a sharp pair of snips for harvesting, and you can run most of a cottage garden with these alone.

How do I know if a tool is quality?

Quality tools share a few features: forged (not stamped) metal in the working parts, hardwood handles rather than plastic, visible build quality at the joints, and a published guarantee. Cheap tools often fail at the join between handle and head, or bend in use. Spending more on fewer tools is almost always the better long-term investment.

How should I store garden tools?

Dry, off the ground, and ideally protected from frost. A shed or garage with hooks for hanging tools is ideal — hanging keeps cutting edges off surfaces and lets handles dry properly. Wipe metal parts with an oily rag before putting away. A well-stored tool lasts decades; a damp-stored tool can rust irreparably in a single winter.
