🌿 Understanding the Plant
Lathyrus odoratus 'Edith Flanagan' is a Hardy Annual (H3). As a member of the Spencer group, it is specifically bred for the ruffled texture of its petals and the substantial stem length required by florists and exhibition growers.
Exquisite Bicolour: The unique pink-on-pink tones offer a sophisticated alternative to solid colours, blending beautifully with pastels or providing a soft contrast to deeper purples.
Powerful Fragrance: Many modern Sweet Peas have lost their scent, but 'Edith Flanagan' is noted for its high oil content, releasing a heavy, sweet perfume that can fill a room from just a single small posy.
🌱 Growing Guide
Sweet Peas are famously rewarding but are "hungry" plants that require rich soil and consistent attention to flower all summer long.
How to Sow:
- Autumn Sowing (October/November): Sow in deep pots or root trainers. Overwintering in a cold frame allows for a massive root system and flowers as early as May.
- Spring Sowing (January–March): Sow indoors 1cm deep in moist compost; keep cool (around 15°C) to prevent germination failure from heat. Soaking seeds in tepid water overnight before sowing can help rehydration.
Where to Plant: Plant out in late March or April. They demand full sun and deep, fertile soil—digging in well-rotted manure or compost before planting is essential. Provide a strong support like a trellis or wigwam immediately.
Ongoing Care: Pinch out the top growing tip when the plant reaches 10cm to encourage bushy growth. The Golden Rule: Pick the flowers daily! Never allow seed pods to form, or the plant will stop flowering.
