About this product
Full description
Summer mulching is the unsung half of the year's mulching calendar. Most gardeners know to mulch in autumn, fewer realise that a generous summer mulch can transform a border's resilience through the dry months — reducing watering needs significantly, keeping soil microorganisms protected from baking sun, and giving plants a moist, friable root zone exactly when they need it most. SummerMix from Dandy's is specifically formulated for the job: a peat-free, moisture-retaining compost-and-mulch blend built for the warm months.
From Dandy's Topsoil, our trusted bulk-supply partners — specialists in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates. Available in seven sizes from small handy bags right through to a full cubic-metre jumbo.
What's in it
SummerMix is the simplest blend of the seasonal range, deliberately so. Summer mulching doesn't need the heavier additions of an autumn or winter mix — it needs moisture retention and steady, slow-release organic feed. The two-ingredient composition delivers exactly that:
- Screened organic compost — the nutrient-rich base that feeds soil microbes and plants alike. Well-broken-down, properly screened, friable and easy to handle
- Composted bark mulch fines — for moisture retention, weed suppression, and the slightly textured finish that holds together as a mulch through summer rain and hose. Bark fines also support soil cooling, keeping root-zone temperatures more stable through hot spells
It's peat-free, as is the whole Dandy's range — they made the move to 100% peat-free long before the law required it of retail composts (which it has from late 2024).
Why summer mulching matters
The benefits of a proper summer mulch aren't always obvious until you've tried it:
- Reduced watering — a 5cm layer of organic mulch can reduce evaporation by 30 to 50 per cent, meaning your borders need significantly less watering through dry spells
- Cooler root zones — soil under a mulch can be 5–10°C cooler than bare soil on a hot day, protecting plant roots and the microorganisms that support healthy growth
- Suppressed summer weeds — mulched soil is significantly harder for weeds to colonise; the seeds that blow in struggle to find light and bare ground
- Steady slow feeding — the organic compost gradually releases nutrients into the soil through the season, supporting fruiting and flowering plants without the sudden spike of synthetic feeds
- Better resilience to dry spells — mulched borders bounce back from drought significantly faster than bare ones, and recover after the first rains rather than struggling for weeks
The unfashionable truth: a single summer mulching session in late spring or early summer often saves more water and worry through July and August than any other garden labour you can do.
What it's for
- Summer border mulch — the headline use. Spread 5–7cm thick over established borders in May or June for maximum dry-month protection
- Around hungry summer crops — tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans, sweetcorn, cucumbers. The bark-fines content keeps moisture in the soil at the exact moment fruit is forming
- Soft fruit beds — raspberries, strawberries, currants. A summer mulch significantly improves fruit size and reduces irrigation
- Container top-dressing — a thin layer of SummerMix over the surface of large containers and pots locks in moisture between waterings
- Newly-planted summer bedding — helps establishing plants through their first hot weeks
- Path-side beds and gravel-garden edges — where soil dries out fastest, summer mulch is most transformative
The complete seasonal compost set
SummerMix is one of three Dandy's seasonal mixes we stock, each formulated for the specific job that season needs:
- SpringMix (Feb–May) — mushroom compost + bark fines + organic compost. The nutrient kickstart for borders waking up after winter
- SummerMix (this, May–August) — organic compost + bark fines. The moisture-retention mulch for keeping borders cool and moist through dry months
- AutumnMix (Sept–Dec) — organic compost + mushroom compost + sand + bark fines + 6-month slow-release feed. The autumn rebuild for bulb planting and pre-loading the soil for winter
Used through the year, the three give your garden the proper season-specific care that quietly compounds into properly fertile, properly structured soil over time.
When to use it
SummerMix is ideal from May through to August:
- May — the prime application month. Apply once the soil has warmed and most spring planting is in. Plants are establishing; the mulch supports them through summer growth
- June — still excellent timing, particularly for late-establishing summer crops
- July and August — mulch where you missed earlier, particularly around drought-stressed plants. Water the ground thoroughly first, then mulch on top to seal in the moisture
For best results, apply when the soil is already moist from rain or watering — the mulch traps in whatever moisture is there, so starting wet is essential.
Choosing your bag size
Available in seven sizes:
- Jumbo Bulk Bag — approximately 1000 litres (one cubic metre) — the largest, and the genuine best-value per litre
- Standard Bulk Bag — approximately 750 litres
- Half Bulk Bag — approximately 500 litres
- 40 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 1000 litres in carry-friendly bags
- 20 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 500 litres
- 10 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 250 litres
- 5 × 25-litre Handy Bags — 125 litres — for a single project or a few raised beds
The bulk bags are properly the best value if you have space for a pallet drop-off. The handy bags are the answer if you have access difficulties — narrow path, steps, an upstairs flat — since each 25-litre bag can be carried by hand.
About Dandy's
Dandy's are our trusted bulk-supply partners — a long-established Welsh family business specialising in topsoils, mulches, composts and garden aggregates, supplied direct in bulk and handy bags. We stock their range because they do the unglamorous bulk products properly: well-screened materials, honest descriptions, sensible bag sizes for both serious gardeners and small projects. And because they made the move to 100% peat-free composts long before the law required it.
A small thought: the gardeners who properly look after their soil are quietly the ones with the best gardens. They mulch in spring to wake the borders up, they mulch in summer to keep them moist, they mulch in autumn to tuck them in. By the third or fourth year of consistent mulching the soil itself is transformed — deeper, darker, more alive, properly resilient. SummerMix is the under-recognised middle act of that quiet annual rhythm. Worth not skipping.
