Scabious 'Black Knight' Seeds

Drama, mystery, and deep maroon-purple velvet blooms that are often mistaken for black. These honey-scented 'Pincushion' flowers sway on long, wiry stems, providing a sophisticated focal point for summer bouquets and a buzzing haven for pollinators.

Scabious 'Black Knight' (Scabiosa atropurpurea) is an essential addition for anyone looking to add drama, depth, and mystery to their borders. It produces an abundance of dome-shaped, pincushion flowers in a deep shade of maroon-purple that so closely resembles black velvet it is often mistaken for it. The dark petals are beautifully speckled with white stamens that look like tiny pins in a cushion, giving it its famous common name.

Released on warm days, the flowers produce a subtle, sweet honey fragrance that attracts bees and butterflies in droves. Standing tall on long, wiry stems (up to 90cm), 'Black Knight' is a firm favourite for florists because it adds a moody, sophisticated touch to any summer bouquet. It is a tough, reliable hardy annual that follows the 'Cut and Come Again' rule—the more you pick, the more it produces!

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Black Knight' is a Hardy Annual (H4). It is a high-performing "workhorse" of the cottage garden, completing its entire life cycle in a single season while showing surprising resilience to typical British weather.

Floral Architecture: The blooms are composed of a dense, dark central cushion surrounded by delicate outer petals. The contrasting white anthers (the "pins") create a shimmering effect against the deep maroon velvet backdrop.

Biodiversity Star: Listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, it is an absolute magnet for bees and butterflies. Its flat-topped structure provides the perfect landing platform for pollinators to forage throughout the summer.

🌱 Growing Guide

Scabious are robust and easy to grow, provided they are given maximum sunlight and excellent drainage.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to April for early blooms, or in September to overwinter for even stronger plants next year. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover with a very light dusting of vermiculite—seeds require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C; seedlings typically appear in 10-14 days. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors in May once the soil has warmed.

Where to Plant:
Plant out in late May in full sun. They thrive in neutral to alkaline (chalky) soil. If you have heavy clay, add grit to the planting hole, as they will rot if their roots sit in winter-wet soil.

Ongoing Care:
Support the 90cm stems early in the season with twiggy sticks or netting to prevent them from flopping in summer storms. Deadhead regularly to prevent the plant from setting seed; this signals the plant to keep producing new "pincushions" until the first frosts of November.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations

The velvety maroon of 'Black Knight' is a designer's secret for creating sophisticated contrasts:

  • ☁️ Cosmos 'Purity': The Monochrome Look. The airy, pristine white flowers of Cosmos 'Purity' provide a stark, modern contrast to the heavy, dark velvet columns of the Scabious. This duo is a staple for professional-standard bouquets.
  • 🌿 Ammi Majus: The Textural Match. Pairing the deep "cushions" of Scabious with the light, frothy white lace of Ammi Majus creates a romantic, meadow-style display that is a favourite for wedding floristry.
