Poppy 'Lauren's Grape' Seeds
Large, bowl-shaped single flowers in a luscious, deep shade of violet-plum with a silky satin sheen. Set against elegant silver-blue foliage, this cult classic provides a dark and moody focal point followed by magnificent sculptural seed heads.
Discovered growing in a garden by the famous designer Lauren Springer, this variety has become a cult classic. It produces large, bowl-shaped single flowers in a luscious, deep shade of violet-plum or rich burgundy. The petals have a silky, satin sheen and usually feature a darker spot at the base, surrounding a creamy circle of stamens.
Set against glaucous, silver-blue foliage, the dark flowers look incredible. But the show doesn't end when the petals drop. 'Lauren's Grape' produces magnificent, urn-shaped, blue-grey seed heads. These stand stiff and tall through autumn, looking like architectural sculptures in the winter garden or adding structure to dried flower arrangements.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Papaver somniferum 'Lauren's Grape' is a Very Hardy Annual (H7). It completes its entire life cycle in a single season but is incredibly resilient to British winter frosts as a young seedling.
Self-Seeding Legacy: This variety is a brilliant self-seeder. If you leave the architectural seed heads to dry on the plant, the "pepper pot" lids will eventually open and scatter thousands of seeds in the wind, giving you a drift of purple poppies popping up for free every year.
Biodiversity Hero: Listed as an RHS Plant for Pollinators, its single, open flower structure provides a massive amount of easily accessible pollen for bees during the peak of summer.
🌱 Growing Guide
Poppies are remarkably easy to grow, provided you respect their one absolute rule: do not move them once they have sprouted.
How to Sow:
Like all poppies, this variety has a deep taproot and resents being transplanted. Always direct sow where you want them to flower. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of raked soil in Autumn (Sept-Oct) for earlier, larger plants, or in Spring (March-May). Press the seeds down gently but do not cover them—they require light to trigger germination.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun with well-drained soil. They thrive in sandy, gritty, or chalky ground. If your soil is heavy clay, mix in plenty of grit before sowing to ensure the roots do not sit in winter-wet soil.
Ongoing Care:
Thinning is crucial. Once seedlings reach 5cm tall, you must thin them to 30cm apart. If left crowded, the plants will be spindly with tiny flowers. Be brave and pull the smaller ones out! To use as a cut flower, sear the stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds immediately after cutting to stop the sap leaking.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
The dark plum tones of 'Lauren's Grape' need light or structural partners to truly sing:
- ❄️ Ammi Majus: Light vs. Dark. The white, airy lace of Ammi Majus provides a frothy, luminous background that prevents the dark purple poppies from disappearing into the shadows. A professional, high-contrast florist look.
- 🦐 Cerinthe (Honeywort): The Moody Mix. Both plants share beautiful silver-blue glaucous foliage and deep purple tones. Planting them together creates a harmonious, cool-toned "moonlight" border that looks stunning at dusk.
