How the self-watering system works

Inside the base sits a water reservoir with a capillary wicking mat above it. The mat sits under the compost and slowly draws water upward whenever the compost surface starts to dry — delivering moisture consistently rather than in the boom-and-bust cycle of hand watering. How to use it

1. Fill the water reservoir through the appropriate fill point until you can see water in the side window
2. Add seed compost to the growing area on top of the wicking mat, water the compost lightly from above once to settle it and establish the capillary contact
3. Sow your seeds according to their packet instructions (surface sow for small seeds, cover lightly for larger)
4. Close the clear lid with vents partially closed for initial germination phase
5. Position on a bright windowsill or heated bench, avoiding direct hot sun through glass which can overheat the propagator
6. Check the side window every few days — top up the reservoir when water level gets low
7. Open the vents gradually as seedlings grow to reduce humidity and start hardening off
8. Remove the lid entirely once seedlings have their first true leaves and are ready to be pricked out

Care and maintenance

• Between sowings — empty and clean thoroughly, particularly the wicking mat which can develop algae or fungal residue if left with dirty water. A mild bleach solution rinsed thoroughly works well
• Wicking mat replacement — the mat lasts many sowing cycles but may eventually need replacing if it becomes ineffective at drawing water. Check the manufacturer's spare parts availability
• Winter storage — empty and dry completely before storing over winter to prevent mould
