Chrysanthemum 'Painted Daisies' Seeds
If you think daisies are just white and yellow, think again. 'Painted Daisies' (Annual Chrysanthemums) are like a kaleidoscope in flower form. Each bloom features distinct, concentric rings of scarlet, mahogany, bright yellow, and purple, creating a striking "bullseye" effect.
These are incredibly rewarding plants for beginners. They grow fast, produce mounds of ferny, succulent foliage, and pump out hundreds of flowers from mid-summer right through to autumn. They are excellent cut flowers, adding a retro, playful vibe to any bouquet, and are absolutely covered in bees on sunny days.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
This is a Hardy Annual (Ismelia carinata, formerly Chrysanthemum carinatum).
Do not confuse these with the perennial "Mums" sold in autumn. These are true meadow annuals that complete their life cycle in one season. They are tough, weather-resistant, and thrive in British summers.
The "Cockade" Flower: The distinct rings of colour on the petals are often compared to a rosette or cockade, making them stand out vividly against plain green foliage.
🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow
These are "easy-peasy" seeds, perfect for kids or first-time growers.
Germination:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May. Scatter seeds onto raked soil and cover lightly (3mm deep). They germinate quickly (7-14 days). You can also sow indoors earlier in February
Where to Sow:
They need full sun. They are not fussy about soil type but prefer it to be well-drained. They look fantastic sown in drifts in a border or filling gaps in the veg patch.
Care While Growing:
Pinch: When seedlings are 10-15cm tall, pinch out the top tip. This encourages the plant to bush out and produces way more flowers.
Support: They grow to about 60cm. In very windy gardens, they might need a little support from some twiggy sticks.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions
The busy pattern of 'Painted Daisies' needs solid blocks of colour to calm it down:
- 💙 Cornflower 'Blue Ball': The Solid Contrast. The solid electric blue of the cornflower picks out the purple rings in the Chrysanthemum, creating a cohesive, meadow-style look.
- 🧡 Calendula 'Indian Prince': The Warm Match. Both plants share warm yellow and mahogany tones. Growing them together creates a fiery, "hot" border that glows in the evening sun.
