About this product

Full description

There's a particular kind of garden that has come back into fashion, and rightly so — the soft, informal, gently wild garden, full of native flowers and humming with bees and butterflies, where nature is made welcome rather than tidied away. The British Meadow gloves are a celebration of exactly that garden. The print scatters delicate meadow flowers and fluttering butterflies across a deep, classic navy background, and the effect is quietly beautiful: the jewel blues, pinks and yellows of the blooms glowing against the dark, just as wildflowers do against a summer dusk.

It's a design with real heritage behind it. The illustrations are drawn from the RHS Lindley Collections — one of the world's most significant horticultural archives — and date back as far as 1815, the age of Jane Austen and the Regency garden. There's something rather lovely in wearing two-hundred-year-old botanical art to do the morning's deadheading, and something very on-brand for any gardener who plants for the pollinators and loves a border left a little wild.

From Burgon & Ball, the Sheffield toolmaker who've been making garden tools since 1730, in their RHS-endorsed "Gifts for Gardeners" collection. Supplied to us through our partners at AllotMate, who curate proper, well-made tools and equipment for gardeners and allotmenteers who'd rather buy once.

The design

The British Meadow print is soft, naturalistic, and rooted in a love of British wildlife:

  • Meadow flowers and butterflies — a celebration of native wildflowers and the pollinators they support, perfectly suited to the informal, wildlife-friendly garden
  • Illustrations dating back to 1815, specially selected from the RHS Lindley Collections of historic botanical art
  • A classic navy background that lets the jewel-bright blooms and butterflies really shine — striking, but soft and timeless rather than loud
  • The whole effect is the garden in early summer: gentle, generous, and alive with movement

If the British Bloom print is the dressed-up cutting garden and the Asteraceae the soft late-summer border, British Meadow is the wildflower patch and the pollinator border — the gloves for the gardener who plants for the bees.

What makes them work

The construction is identical to the rest of the RHS gift glove range — beautiful design backed by genuinely thoughtful working features:

  • Cushioned palm — proper protection for everyday garden work, reducing hand fatigue during longer sessions
  • Gathered wrist — close-fitting cuff that keeps soil, mulch and small debris from finding their way down your sleeve
  • Soft, tough fabric with elastane stretch — flexible enough for fiddly tasks like deadheading and tying, durable enough to take repeated use
  • Snug, flexible fit — moves naturally with your hand rather than sliding around as you work
  • Machine-washable at 30°C — significantly more practical than most workwear gloves. Pop them in with the next dark wash and they come out fresh for next time

As with the British Bloom design, the dark navy background has a quiet practical bonus: it doesn't show soil and grass stains the way a paler glove would. Practical beauty, in other words.

Sizing

These are a one-size women's fit — roughly a UK women's medium, with a length of around 23.5cm from fingertip to cuff. They suit average to slightly broader women's hands, and many smaller men's hands as well, thanks to the elastane stretch in the fabric.

If you have particularly small or particularly broad hands, the Briers range offers more precise fit options. But for most women's hands, the one-size fit here works comfortably.

As a gift

This pair makes a particularly thoughtful gift for the nature-minded gardener — the one who plants for the pollinators and leaves a corner of the garden to grow wild. Particularly good for:

  • The wildlife gardener — anyone who grows for the bees, butterflies and birds will love the meadow-and-butterfly theme
  • The naturalistic planter — a gardener whose borders lean towards the soft, informal and meadowy rather than the formal and clipped
  • Mother's Day, birthdays, Christmas — a distinctive, beautiful gift that feels considered rather than ordinary
  • A new or beginner gardener — lovely RHS-endorsed kit to start them off in style
  • Pair with a packet of wildflower or pollinator seeds for a complete, thoughtful gift for the bee-friendly gardener

If you're choosing between the RHS gift gloves we stock — British Meadow (navy, wildflowers and butterflies), British Bloom (dark and dramatic, dahlias and peonies) and Asteraceae (sage green and soft) — pick by the recipient's taste. All are made to the same specification; the difference is purely in the design.

Looking after them

The machine-washable construction makes care genuinely easy:

  • Shake out and brush off visible soil before washing
  • Machine wash at 30°C — the navy base colour is forgiving of mixed loads
  • Air dry away from direct heat — the printed fabric will fade quickly under tumble dryers or strong sun
  • Avoid bleach or fabric softeners — both can damage the print and the stretch fabric
  • Store flat or hung gently rather than scrunched up

Treated this way, the print stays vivid and the gloves keep their lovely look for many seasons.

About Burgon & Ball and the RHS Lindley Collections

Burgon & Ball have been making garden tools in Sheffield since 1730, drawing on the city's centuries-old expertise in steel and craft. Their RHS-endorsed "Gifts for Gardeners" collection draws on the RHS Lindley Collections — one of the most significant horticultural libraries and archives in the world, containing thousands of botanical illustrations and historical garden materials. We're proud to stock pieces from this collaboration; using centuries-old botanical art to decorate practical garden kit is the kind of small cultural project that suits our shop exactly.

A small thought: a real meadow is never quite tidy, and that's the whole point of it — it's the busiest, most alive part of any garden, full of bees and butterflies and the quiet hum of things getting on with their summer. These gloves carry a little of that spirit to the potting bench, a reminder every time you pull them on of why we leave a corner wild.
