Seeds to Sow in December

Don't let the cold stop you! While the cottage garden is sleeping, December is a surprisingly busy month for planning and even sowing. This is the perfect time to get a head start on your kitchen garden or sow seeds that need a cold snap to germinate.

• For the Kitchen Garden: Get your tastebuds ready for the new year. Herbs like Basil can be sown indoors in pots on a warm, bright, sunny windowsill for a fresh, fragrant winter harvest.

• For Early Flowers: Some hardy perennials and annuals, like Larkspur or Eryngium (Sea Holly), actually benefit from a period of cold (a process called 'stratification'). Sowing them now in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and letting the frost work its magic can lead to fantastic germination in spring.
