About this product

Full description

A small but very specific solution to one of the most common Aeonium problems — the moment when a mature specimen's slender woody stem can no longer comfortably hold up its rosette of fleshy leaves. This handmade raw steel support, made in Norfolk by independent maker LV Bespoke, is a simple steel ring on a stake that slips around the stem and gives it the discreet structural assistance it needs to keep growing upright without restriction.

Why Aeoniums need this

Aeoniums — particularly Aeonium arboreum, A. 'Schwarzkopf', A. 'Sunburst', and the larger cultivars — develop a fascinating architectural form as they mature. A slender woody stem rises 30cm, then 60cm, then a metre or more, with a single dramatic rosette of fleshy leaves perched at the top. The plant is beautiful but mechanically awkward: the stem is essentially a long lever, the rosette at the top is heavy, and as it grows the centre of gravity climbs further from the base.

The result, in most homes and most gardens, is the same eventual problem. The stem starts to lean. A gust of wind or an accidental knock when watering can leave it slumped against a wall. Repotting and root disturbance can leave it unable to right itself. Without intervention, many Aeoniums end up with permanent kinks in their stems or, worse, broken at the base.

That's what this support is for. It holds the stem steady at the height where the lean tends to start, supporting the rosette without restricting growth or marking the bark. The plant continues developing normally; the steel does the structural work the stem can't quite manage on its own.

Made by LV Bespoke in Norfolk

LV Bespoke is an independent Norfolk maker producing handcrafted metal garden accessories — the kind of small, beautifully-designed objects you used to find in good country garden shops and rarely see now. Each support is made individually, with attention to weld quality and finish. The raw steel is left unpainted so it ages naturally over time, developing the patina that many growers prize as part of the support's character.

Choosing your size

Four lengths are available to match the height of the lean point on your particular plant:

  • 30mm — young Aeoniums and compact cultivars where the rosette is still close to the soil line
  • 40mm — the most popular choice, suiting most mid-stage Aeoniums in 12-15cm pots
  • 50mm — mature specimens where the stem has reached 20-30cm and is starting to arc
  • 60mm — tall, established plants needing serious support, or where you want to leave room for further upward growth

If you're unsure, the 40mm or 50mm suits most mature houseplant Aeoniums. The ring diameter is 25mm across all sizes, which fits the great majority of mature Aeonium stems comfortably. Many growers buy two or three different sizes so they have the right support to hand as their collection grows and stems lengthen.

Indoor or outdoor

Equally suitable for windowsill houseplants and outdoor succulent collections during the summer months. The raw steel finish weathers gracefully outdoors — expect surface rust and a deep brown patina over the first few months, which both protects the steel underneath and adds visual character that suits the sculptural nature of the Aeonium itself.

Specifications

  • Material: Raw steel (will develop a natural patina)
  • Ring diameter: 25mm
  • Lengths available: 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm
  • Use: Indoor or outdoor
  • Made by: LV Bespoke, Norfolk

Raw steel is intentionally left unfinished and will develop a natural patina over time. Most growers find this character is part of the appeal — the support ages with the plant rather than looking newly bought against an established specimen.

What's included
1 x Aeonium stem plant support in your chosen length
Care and use
Push the stake gently into the compost alongside the stem so the ring
encircles the stem at the point of greatest lean.
No need to tie - the ring acts as a guide, not a binding.
Outdoor use will accelerate patina formation; indoor use produces a
slower, more even patina over months.
Wipe with a dry cloth if used indoors to remove dust.
Avoid prolonged contact with damp compost on the metal surface where
possible - some surface oxidation is normal and expected.
