How to Grow Zinnia
'Queeny Mix' from Seed

The zinnias florists ask for: lime green, blush, dusky coral and faded red, often shading from one to another across a single flower.

The Queeny zinnias are the ones florists ask for by name. Their colouring is muted and antique, in lime green, blush, dusky coral and faded red, and many blooms shade from one tone to another across a single flower. A bunch of them never looks flat.

They have become a fixture at late summer weddings for exactly that reason. The colours sit easily with almost anything and photograph far better than bright zinnias do. Grow them like any zinnia: warm start, no root disturbance, early pinch and plenty of cutting.

Understanding the Plant

'Queeny Mix' is a blend of Zinnia elegans from the Queeny series, bred for dahlia-like double flowers in soft, blended colours. Like all zinnias, it is a half-hardy annual that needs warmth to grow well and grinds to a halt in cold, wet weather.

Flower colour often shifts as each bloom ages, so the same plant can offer several shades at once. That built-in variety is what makes it so useful in mixed arrangements.

For wedding and event flowers

If you are growing for a particular date, sow a few batches two to three weeks apart from April to June. Staggered sowings give fresh plants at their peak across late summer rather than one big flush.

02

When & How to Sow

Zinnias dislike root disturbance, so sow directly into modules. They germinate fast in warmth, and later sowings soon catch up with early ones.

Sow in succession

A sowing in April, another in May and a last in June keeps plants at their best from July to October.

  1. Sow into modules. Sow one or two seeds per cell, about 5mm deep, at 20 to 25°C. Seedlings appear in 5 to 10 days.

  2. Thin and grow on. Keep the strongest seedling in each cell and grow on in good light, watering sparingly.

  3. Plant out when warm. Harden off and plant out from late May to June, 25 to 30cm apart, keeping the root ball intact. Pinch or cut the first bloom early.

Growing On Tips

☀️

Warmth matters

Plant in the sunniest, most sheltered spot. Zinnias grow slowly in cool conditions.

✂️

Pinch early

Cut the first bloom when plants are about 20cm tall to make them branch.

💧

Dry leaves

Water the soil in the morning. Wet foliage overnight is what starts mildew.

💐

Check before cutting

Gently shake the stem 20cm below the flower. If it holds firm, it is ready to cut.

🌿

Planting partners

The muted colours suit grasses, dahlias in soft tones, and cosmos in white or blush.

🦋

Wildlife value

Butterflies and bees visit the flowers through late summer.

Plants stall outside Planted out into cold soil Wait for mild nights before planting out.
Seedlings collapse Cold, wet compost Keep warm and water from below only when the compost surface is dry.

When to Expect Flowers

Plants from an April sowing flower from July. With regular cutting, and a second sowing in May or June, you will have flowers until the weather turns in October.
