Dried Nigella Hispanica Seed Heads

While standard Nigella pods are round and cute, Nigella hispanica (Spanish Love-in-a-mist) is bold, structural, and eccentric. The seed pods are larger and topped with spreading, star-shaped "horns" that look exactly like a medieval Jester's Hat.

These stems are the ultimate conversation starter in a dried arrangement. The pods dry to a beautiful natural mix of pale green and straw-gold, often with striking burgundy stripes running up the sides. Whether you use them to add "spikiness" to a wreath or height to a vase, they bring a unique, architectural quality that you just don't get with ordinary flowers.

🌿 About these Pods

These are the seed capsules of Nigella hispanica. We harvest them in late summer once the unique "crown" shape has fully formed. They are air-dried naturally to preserve their rigidity and subtle colour markings.

The Star View: Look at them from above! The spreading styles create a perfect five-pointed star shape, making them incredible for flat-lay photography or wreath work.

🎨 Styling Ideas

These architectural stems work best where their shape can be seen:

  • Wreaths: The "horns" stick out beautifully from moss or foliage wreaths, adding texture that breaks up the round outline.
  • Minimalist Vases: Place 5-7 stems in a narrow-necked bottle. The complex shape needs very little accompaniment to look good.
  • Christmas Decor: The star shape makes them perfect for festive styling. Spray them silver or gold and tuck them into your Christmas tree branches.

Perfect Dried Companions

Pair these spiky pods with softer textures for balance:

  • 🌾 Dried Panicum Grass: The Softener. The misty, frothy explosion of Panicum grass softens the hard, angular lines of the Nigella pods.
  • 🌸 Strawflowers (Helichrysum): Colour & Shape. The round, flat faces of Strawflowers contrast perfectly with the upright, pointed shape of the Nigella hispanica.

⚠️ Seeds Inside
These pods are packed full of black seeds. While they are generally secure, vigorous shaking might release a few seeds. Shake them gently outdoors before arranging if you want to avoid spills!

🌿 Care & display tips
Keep your dried flowers out of direct sunlight and away from damp — both will fade and soften the stems over time. No water needed. Arrange loosely in a vase or tie with twine for a hanging display. Handle gently as dried stems can be brittle.
💐 Using in arrangements
Dried flowers work beautifully with other dried stems, pampas grass, and seed heads. If using in a wreath or floral foam, wire the stems first for extra security. For wedding work, we recommend ordering a little extra to allow for any breakage during handling.
📬 Delivery & packaging
Dried flowers are packed carefully in a rigid box to protect the stems in transit. Dispatched within 2–3 working days. All packaging is compostable or recyclable. Free delivery on orders over £30.
