Cobaea scandens 'Purple' Seeds

Huge, exotic bells that shift from creamy-green to deep inky-purple. A vigorous, jungle-style climber that covers fences fast and provides a spectacular late-summer finale.

If you have an ugly fence, a bare trellis, or an archway that needs covering fast, the Cup and Saucer Vine is your answer. This vigorous climber produces masses of lush, tropical foliage and huge, bell-shaped flowers that look like they belong in a jungle.

The blooms are fascinating to watch. They emerge as a pale, creamy green "cup" resting on a green "saucer" (calyx). As they mature over a few days, the cup floods with colour, turning a deep, rich inky-purple. It blooms late in the season (August to the first frosts), providing a spectacular finale to the gardening year when other climbers are fading.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Cobaea scandens is a robust Half-Hardy Annual (H2) in the UK climate. While it is a woody perennial in its native Mexico, it grows with such tropical vigour that it is treated as a high-performance climber for a single season. It possesses the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), a mark of excellence for its reliability and architectural impact.

The "Gripper" Biology: This vine climbs using highly specialized, branching tendrils that emerge from the leaf tips. These tendrils act as sensitive hooks, seeking out any rough surface to anchor the plant. To achieve its full 4-metre height, provide a sturdy trellis, wire network, or netting from the moment of planting.

A Late-Season Spectacle: Cobaea is a daylight-sensitive plant, meaning it typically triggers its heavy flowering phase as the days begin to shorten in late summer. This makes it an invaluable garden asset, providing a fresh burst of exotic colour and lush greenery in August and September when many other climbers have finished their display.

🌱 Growing Guide

Cobaea seeds are large and flat; they have a specific sowing requirement: never lay them flat on the soil, as water can sit on the surface and cause them to rot.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from January to March. Push each seed into the compost vertically (on its edge) so that water naturally drains away. Maintain a constant temperature of 20-25°C—a heated propagator or warm airing cupboard is ideal. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and a sheltered position; they will sulk and produce very few flowers in shade. Only plant out in late May or June once all risk of frost has passed. These are hungry, fast-growing vines; for the most spectacular display, we recommend feeding weekly with a potash-rich tomato fertilizer once the first flower buds appear.

Ongoing Care:
Cobaea grows rapidly once the soil warms. You will likely need to move seedlings into larger pots with a temporary cane before they are ready for the garden. Once planted out, they require very little intervention other than ensuring they have found their support. Note that while beautiful, the flowers are not suitable for cutting as they fade quickly once removed from the vine.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations

Because Cobaea flowers late, the best garden displays use earlier-flowering available partners from our range to provide a continuous show:

  • 🌸 Sweet Pea 'Old Spice Starry Night': The Early Shift. Plant these together on the same support. The Sweet Peas will provide fragrance and flowers from June to July, then as they fade in the summer heat, the vigorous Cobaea will grow over them to provide its exotic purple bells from August until the frosts.
  • 🔥 Nasturtium 'Tom Thumb': The Ground Cover. Vigorous climbers like Cobaea can often have "bare legs" at the base. Planting a carpet of dwarf 'Tom Thumb' Nasturtiums will hide the lower stems and provide a stunning fiery orange and red contrast to the deep purple bells above.
