The XL Cheyenne Mutant Chilli is an exciting development from the well-established 'Cheyenne' Capsicum annuum variety. While the exact moment of its "mutation" or selective breeding for larger size is part of the ongoing evolution of chilli cultivation, it represents a stable, larger fruiting form of the classic Cheyenne. As a member of the Capsicum annuum genus, it shares characteristics with many common peppers, but this particular variant stands out for its impressive pod dimensions. It's a testament to the continuous efforts of breeders to enhance desirable traits in existing cultivars.

The XL Cheyenne Mutant Chilli plant is a vigorous and prolific grower, reaching a height of 60-90 cm (24-36 inches), forming a bushy, well-branched structure. The plant's robust nature allows it to support a generous harvest of its significantly larger pods. True to its "XL Mutant" name, the pods are indeed impressive. They typically grow to 8-12 cm (3-5 inches) in length and 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 inches) in diameter, exhibiting the classic elongated, slightly curved, and sometimes pointed shape of a cayenne-type pepper. They ripen from a vibrant green to a striking, glossy red when mature, making them visually appealing on the plant and in your dishes.

Quantity of Seeds 10 seeds per packet
Origin A stabilised mutation derived from the standard Cheyenne hybrid, likely through open pollination and selective breeding in Europe or the UK. Developed for larger pod size and distinct phenotypic traits
Genus Capsicum annuum
Scoville Rating/Heat Level Approx. 30,000–50,000 SHU
Offers a pleasant medium heat that lingers, similar to cayenne peppers but with more body and depth
Plant Size Mature plants typically reach 60–90 cm (2–3 feet). Compact but with strong lateral branching.  Glossy green leaves with occasional purpling on stems or veins depending on light and genetics. Bushy and well-suited for containers or raised beds; ornamental and productive
Pod Size Significantly larger than traditional Cheyenne — 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) long. Ripens from green to deep glossy red, sometimes with peachy undertones at full maturity
Flavour The XL Cheyenne Mutant Chilli delivers a clean, straightforward chilli flavour that is highly desirable for its versatility. It offers a bright, slightly fruity undertone that complements its medium heat. Unlike some super-hot varieties, it lacks strong smoky or earthy notes, allowing its pure chilli essence to shine through. This makes it an excellent all-rounder for drying into flakes or powder, making hot sauces, adding fresh to salsas, stir-fries, or infusing oils. Its flavour is robust enough to stand out but not so dominant that it clashes with other ingredients.
Growing Conditions

The XL Cheyenne Mutant Chili Pepper thrives in full sun and warm conditions, making it perfect for hot summer climates. This variety prefers well-draining, fertile soil to encourage strong growth. The plant can reach a height of 3 to 4 feet and is well-suited for both garden beds and containers. It requires regular watering but should not be waterlogged, as it prefers evenly moist soil.

All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
