The Red Savina Habanero is a meticulously bred cultivar of Capsicum chinense, the species responsible for many of the world's hottest peppers. It was developed in the United States by Frank Garcia of G.M. Laboratories, Inc. in California, through a selective breeding program of a standard red Habanero. Its dedication to achieving extreme pungency paid off when it was recognized by Guinness World Records in 1994 as the hottest chilli in the world, a title it held for over a decade. While newer, hotter varieties have emerged, the Red Savina remains a significant and historically important pepper, representing a pivotal moment in the quest for extreme heat.
Quantity of Seeds | 10 seeds per packet |
Origin | USA |
Genus | Capsicum chinense |
Scoville Rating/Heat Level |
Prepare for a seriously intense and lingering heat! The Red Savina Habanero typically registers between 350,000 to 577,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), with some individual pods even reaching higher. This places it firmly in the "super-hot" category, delivering a searing heat that builds quickly and lingers for a significant duration. While surpassed by modern titans, it still offers a formidable kick that is multiple times hotter than a regular orange Habanero and significantly more potent than a Scotch Bonnet. Due to its high heat, handling these chillies with care is advised. Wear gloves, and avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas. |
Plant Size | The Red Savina Habanero plant is a vigorous and moderately sized grower, typically reaching a height of 60-90 cm (24-36 inches). It develops a sturdy, well-branched structure, often forming a dense canopy of lush green foliage. It is known for being a productive plant, yielding a good number of its distinctive pods. |
Pod Size | The pods themselves are visually appealing, ripening from a light green to a deep, glossy fiery red when fully mature. They are generally 4-6 cm (1.6-2.4 inches) in length and 2.5-4 cm (1-1.6 inches) in diameter, exhibiting the classic lantern-like or slightly wrinkled, blocky shape characteristic of many Habanero varieties |
Flavour | Beyond its formidable heat, the Red Savina Habanero offers a surprisingly rich and complex flavour profile, highly characteristic of Capsicum chinense. It boasts a distinct fruity sweetness with prominent tropical notes, often described as having hints of apricot, passionfruit, or citrus. This initial sweetness provides a fantastic, albeit brief, counterpoint to the intense, building heat. Its robust flavour makes it an excellent ingredient for crafting intensely hot sauces, salsas, marinades, chilli oils, or for adding a powerful, fruity kick to stews, curries, and barbecue rubs. |
Growing Conditions |
Sow seeds 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep in a fine seed-starting mix. Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost date. Maintain soil temperature at 24–30°C (75–86°F). Keep humidity high with a dome or plastic cover, venting daily to prevent mold. Transplant when seedlings have 4–6 true leaves and when night time temperatures stay above 15°C (59°F). Gradually harden them off before moving outdoors. Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, as they stay relatively compact. Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Let the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) during the vegetative phase; switch to a fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus once flowering begins to boost fruiting. |
All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
