The Paper Lantern Habanero (Capsicum chinense) is a distinctive habanero variety known for its elongated, lantern-shaped pods, exceptional productivity, and fiery heat. It typically reaches 250,000–400,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making it one of the hottest habanero types. Originating from the USA, this variety is prized by gardeners for its early maturity, adaptability to cooler climates, and abundant yields. The peppers develop a striking bright red colour when ripe, accompanied by a fruity, slightly smoky flavour that makes them excellent for sauces, salsas, and drying.

Growing Conditions

Pre-soak seeds in warm water or a diluted chamomile tea for 6–12 hours to improve germination.  Sow seeds 8–10 weeks before the last frost date.  Plant ¼ inch (6 mm) deep in a sterile seed-starting mix.  Maintain a soil temperature of 25–30°C (77–86°F) – use a heat mat if necessary.  Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture.  Transplant when seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves and are well-established.  Harden off over 7–10 days before moving outdoors or to a greenhouse.  Fertilize with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer early in growth.  Switch to a bloom-boosting fertilizer when flowering starts.

All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
