The Bird’s Eye Baby chilli is a compact, ornamental variety related to the traditional Bird’s Eye chilli (Capsicum frutescens or sometimes Capsicum annuum depending on the strain). It produces tiny, upright-growing, fiery pods packed with heat — often between 50,000–100,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This variety is prized not only for its culinary use but also for its ornamental beauty, with dozens of colourful little peppers ripening in a mix of green, yellow, orange, and red on small, bushy plants. It’s excellent for pots, balconies, and garden borders.
The Bird’s Eye Baby chilli is a perfect blend of beauty and fire — a compact, prolific plant producing tiny, searingly hot chillies. It’s ideal for growers with limited space, lovers of ornamental peppers, or cooks who crave a punch of heat in a tiny package. With proper care, it offers months of colour and spice from a single plant.
Quantity of Seeds | 10 seeds per packet |
Origin | Native to Mexico, cultivated across Southeast Asia. |
Genus | Usually Capsicum frutescens (sometimes annuum depending on source). |
Scoville Rating/Heat Level |
50,000–100,000 SHU — very hot, comparable to Thai or Bird’s Eye chillies. Thin-walled, crisp when fresh, drying easily on the plant. |
Plant Size | Compact, typically 30–50 cm (12–20 inches). Bushy, upright, with multiple branches. Small, smooth green leaves. Small, white flowers often appearing singly at the leaf nodes. |
Pod Size | Tiny, slender, upright-growing pods, about 1.5–2.5 cm (0.6–1 inch) long, tapering to a sharp point. Green → yellow → orange → bright red at full maturity. |
Flavour | Sharp, clean heat with a slightly grassy, citrusy, or fruity edge. Perfect for sambals, stir-fries, pickling, hot sauces, drying, and infusing oils. Often used fresh, dried, or crushed. |
Growing Conditions |
Sow seeds 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep in a fine seed-starting mix. Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost date. Maintain soil temperature at 24–30°C (75–86°F). Keep humidity high with a dome or plastic cover, venting daily to prevent mold. Transplant when seedlings have 4–6 true leaves and when night time temperatures stay above 15°C (59°F). Gradually harden them off before moving outdoors. Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, as they stay relatively compact. Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Let the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) during the vegetative phase; switch to a fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus once flowering begins to boost fruiting. |
All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
