The Armageddon chilli pepper (Capsicum chinense) is one of the hottest commercially bred chilli peppers, developed in the UK. It was bred to push the limits of heat while offering higher yields and faster maturity compared to other superhot varieties. With its fiery heat—estimated around 1,300,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)—and fruity, citrusy undertones, the Armageddon is a favourite among hot sauce makers, competitive chilli eaters, and thrill-seeking growers.
High-yielding for a superhot variety, which is one of its main advantages over other extreme-heat peppers like the Carolina Reaper or Trinidad Scorpion. Excellent for making hot sauces, chilli pastes, salsas, and powders. Due to its extreme heat, it’s typically not eaten raw or in large quantities. Always handle with gloves and avoid skin or eye contact.
The Armageddon chilli pepper is a fiery, high-yielding superhot variety with a balance of scorching heat and fruity undertones. Designed for faster maturity and higher productivity than many superhots. With proper propagation, care, and patience, the Armageddon delivers a rewarding harvest of blisteringly hot, bright red pods that command respect in any kitchen.
Quantity of Seeds | 10 seeds per packet |
Origin |
United Kingdom. Its a British bred hybrid, making it the first super-hot chilli to be bred in the UK |
Genus | Hybrid of Capsicum Chinense and Capsicum Frutescens |
Scoville Rating/Heat Level | Around 1,300,000 SHU, making it one of the hottest peppers available commercially — extremely hot but slightly below Reaper or Scorpion levels. |
Plant Size | Typically 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) tall. Upright, bushy, and vigorous, with a strong branching structure. Medium to large dark green leaves. Small, white flowers typical of the C. chinense group. |
Pod Size | Bumpy, wrinkled, and somewhat blocky pods, often with a pointed or blunt tip. Pods typically measure 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches) long. Green when immature, ripening to a brilliant red when fully mature. Thin to medium walls with a rough, wrinkled surface. |
Flavour | Fruity, slightly citrusy, and floral, with a blast of searing heat that builds quickly and lingers. It’s more flavourful when used in small amounts or incorporated into sauces. |
Growing Conditions |
Plant seeds about 0.5–1 cm (¼–½ inch) deep in a sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before the last expected frost. Maintain soil temperatures of 28–32°C (82–90°F) — warm temperatures are critical for superhot types. Use a heat mat and humidity dome or plastic wrap to retain warmth and moisture. Expect germination in 14–28 days. Superhot seeds can be slower and less predictable, so patience is essential. When seedlings develop 2–4 true leaves, transplant them into larger pots. Harden off for 7–10 days before moving outdoors. Space plants 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) apart to allow for vigorous growth and airflow. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Start with a balanced fertilizer during early growth; once flowering begins, switch to a bloom booster high in potassium and phosphorus. |
All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
