The Chocolate Apocalypse is an exceptionally hot chilli pepper belonging to the Capsicum chinense species. It’s a dark brown (chocolate-coloured) variant from the Apocalypse Scorpion pepper line — one of the hottest pepper families in the world. Known for its extreme heat, gnarly pod shape, and rich, earthy, slightly smoky flavour.

The Chocolate Apocalypse chilli is a striking and ferociously hot superhot variety.  With its wrinkled, chocolate-brown pods and potent, earthy flavour, it’s a must-grow for anyone making ultra-hot sauces or powders. While it requires patience and care during propagation and growing, the reward is a plant that commands attention both in the garden and the kitchen.

Quantity of Seeds 10 seeds per packet
Origin Italy
Genus Capsicum Chinense
Scoville Rating/Heat Level Extremely hot — estimated at 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), on par with other top-tier superhots. Not for the faint-hearted!
Plant Size Typically 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) tall, sometimes taller under optimal conditions. Upright, bushy, and vigorous, with a wide branching structure.  Large, dark green, glossy leaves.  Small white flowers typical of C. chinense.
Pod Size Bumpy, wrinkled, sometimes contorted pods; often resembling scorpion peppers or 7 Pot types. Length typically 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches), with a short tail or stinger on some pods.  Starts green, ripens to a deep chocolate brown when fully mature.  Thin to medium walls, slightly crunchy when fresh, with a wrinkled surface.
Flavour Rich, earthy, smoky, and slightly fruity underneath the overpowering heat. The flavour is more noticeable in small amounts or when used in sauces.
Growing Conditions

Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm (¼–½ inch) deep in a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix.  Start indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost date.  Ideal soil temperature: 28–32°C (82–90°F) — warm temperatures are critical for superhot chinense germination.  Use a heat mat and humidity dome to maintain consistent warmth and moisture.  Superhots are notoriously slow at germinating — expect 14–30 days, sometimes longer. Be patient and avoid overwatering.  Transplant seedlings into larger pots or garden beds when they have 2–4 true leaves. Harden off for 7–10 days before moving outdoors.  Plant 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) apart — plants can get quite large.  Water deeply and regularly but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.  Use a balanced fertilizer during vegetative growth. Switch to a fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus once flowering begins.

All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
