The 7 Pot Yellow is a legendary superhot chilli hailing from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, the origin of the world's most potent peppers. As a member of the fiery Capsicum chinense genus, it belongs to the famed "7 Pot" family, which earned its name from the local lore that a single pod contains enough heat to spice seven pots of stew. This variety lives up to its reputation with an extreme heat level, typically ranging from a blistering 800,000 to over 1,200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), placing it in the same league as the notorious Ghost Pepper.

The plant grows into a large, bushy shrub that can reach a meter in height and width when grown in a pot, and even taller if planted directly in the ground. It is a highly productive variety, adorned with large green leaves that produce an abundance of vibrant pods. The chillies themselves are a visual spectacle, starting as light green and ripening to a brilliant, vivid yellow. The pods are typically the size of a golf ball, with a wonderfully gnarled, bumpy, and wrinkled surface that is characteristic of many superhot peppers.

Beyond its intense heat, the 7 Pot Yellow boasts a remarkably complex and pleasant flavour. The initial taste is a delightful combination of sweetness and fruitiness, with a fresh, zesty, and citrus-like undertone that sets it apart. This tropical flavour profile makes it a prized ingredient for culinary creations, especially homemade hot sauces, where its fruity notes can be highlighted. It is also excellent for drying and grinding into potent chilli powders and salts, but due to its extreme heat, it should always be handled and used with caution.

Sowing & Growing Conditions

As a superhot, this variety requires a long growing season. Sow seeds early (Jan-Mar) in a heated propagator at 25-30°C for best results. Best grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel in the UK to provide the necessary warmth and sun. Use well-draining soil, water regularly, and feed with a high-potassium fertiliser once the first fruits appear. 1
