The 7 Pot Yellow chilli pepper is a member of the Capsicum chinense family, renowned for its striking bright yellow colour and intense, fruity heat. Originating from Trinidad, it's part of the legendary "7 Pot" lineage, named for the apocryphal claim that a single pod can spice seven pots of stew. These chillies offer a unique flavour profile that often includes tropical fruit notes, citrus undertones, and a floral aroma, all preceding a significant and long-lasting burn. The pods themselves are typically bumpy and irregularly shaped, often with a pointed tail, maturing to a vibrant, sunny yellow that signals their fiery nature.

Quantity of Seeds 10 seeds per packet
Origin Trinidad and Tobago
Genus Capsicum Chinense
Scoville Rating/Heat Level The 7 Pot Yellow is undeniably in the super-hot range, with Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) ratings typically falling between 800,000 and over 1,000,000. It delivers an intense and long-lasting heat, characteristic of the 7 Pot family.
Plant Size It typically grows into a bushy plant, reaching heights of 60-120 cm (2-4 feet) and a similar spread, depending on environmental conditions.  The leaves are usually medium to dark green, ovate in shape, and can grow to be several inches long.  The flowers are small, typically white or slightly greenish-white, and often droop downwards. They are self-pollinating but can also be cross-pollinated by insects.
Pod Size

Pods are wrinkled, bumpy, and sometimes slightly pitted, shaped like small lanterns or squat hearts. Size ranges from 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches) long.  Ripens from pale green to vibrant yellow, often with a glowing, almost fluorescent tone when fully mature.

Flavour Distinctively fruity, tropical, and citrusy, with floral undertones. The bright flavour makes it a favourite for yellow hot sauces, salsas, and chutneys.  Ideal for fresh use (with caution), sauces, powders, or pickling. Handle with gloves and avoid contact with eyes and sensitive skin!
Sowing & Growing Conditions

Starting seeds indoors is essential to ensure a long enough growing season. Sow seeds indoors approximately 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost, typically from late January to early March.  Use a high-quality, well-draining seed-starting mix. Avoid using garden soil directly, as it can introduce diseases and impede drainage.  Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep in individual small pots or seed trays.  Consistent and relatively high temperatures are crucial for germination. Maintain a soil temperature range of 27-32°C.  Keep the seed-starting mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Gentle watering with a spray bottle is advisable.  Once seedlings emerge (which can take 2-4 weeks or longer for super-hot varieties), provide them with ample bright light. A sunny windowsill supplemented with grow lights is ideal to prevent weak, elongated growth.  Before transplanting your seedlings outdoors, they need to be gradually acclimatized to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days. This "hardening off" process involves progressively exposing them to more sunlight, wind, and cooler temperatures.

All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
