This fiery beast is the brilliant creation of a dedicated chillihead named Sara Ragoonan. In the passionate and collaborative world of pepper growing, enthusiasts are always looking to push the boundaries of heat and flavour. By taking the long, menacing tail of the Trinidad Scorpion Long and crossing it with the blistering, record-holding heat of the Carolina Reaper, Sara Ragoonan engineered a pepper with a truly fearsome pedigree. It's a direct descendant of the planet's most potent peppers, a handcrafted superhot designed for the ultimate thrill-seeker.
So, what does this volcanic pepper look like? Imagine a chilli that can't quite make up its mind! Thanks to its mixed heritage, the pods are famously variable, which is half the fun. They are typically elongated, growing from 5 to 8 cm long, often with a bumpy, gnarled skin that screams "handle with care!" Many of the peppers will try to replicate the iconic, stinger-like tail of their Scorpion parent, while others will have the more squat, menacing look of a Reaper. They mature from a vibrant green to a blistering, fire-engine red, sometimes with patches of orange, looking every bit as dangerous as they are.
Now, for the flavour and the fire. If you can get past the heat, you'll be met with an intensely fruity and surprisingly sweet flavour, a signature trait of the Capsicum chinense species. Think notes of cherry and citrus, but it's a fleeting sweetness, quickly engulfed by an overwhelming, all-consuming heatwave. With both a Trinidad Scorpion and a Carolina Reaper for parents, the heat level is astronomical, easily soaring above 1.5 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This is not a pepper for snacking! Its use is reserved for the brave and the bold. It's primarily used to create face-meltingly hot sauces and powders, where just a tiny amount can ignite an entire pot of food.
The Sara R Trinidad Scorpion Long x Carolina Reaper grows on a plant that belongs to the Capsicum chinense genus, the family of all the world's hottest peppers. The plant itself is a robust and bushy specimen, typically reaching about 1.2 to 1.5 meters in height in a good growing season. It has large, lush green leaves and a sturdy frame needed to support its formidable produce. It's a sun-worshipper and thrives in hot, humid conditions, rewarding diligent growers with a generous crop of its terrifyingly tasty pods.
The most unique and exciting detail about this particular plant is its genetic variability. Because this is a cross and not yet a fully stable strain (which can take many generations of selective growing), every plant can produce something a little different. This is known as its phenotype. You might get some peppers that look more like a classic Scorpion Long, while others on the very same plant could look more like a Reaper. This unpredictability is a chilli grower's dream, making every harvest a thrilling genetic lottery. You're not just growing a pepper; you're witnessing genetic evolution in your own back garden!
Due to its extreme heat, extreme caution is absolutely necessary. Always wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling, and avoid any direct contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Use in incredibly small quantities and with the utmost respect. Not recommended for casual consumption.

Origin | Sara Rangoonan Trinidad Scorpion Long x Carolina Reaper |
Genus | Capsicum chinense |
Scoville Rating/Heat Level | This chilli is not just hot; it is cataclysmically hot. The Sara Rangoon Trinidad Scorpion Long x Carolina Reaper typically registers an astonishing 1,800,000 to over 2,500,000+ Scoville Heat Units (SHU), placing it firmly among the absolute hottest chillies on the planet. Expect an immediate, agonizing, and prolonged burn that quickly engulfs the entire palate and body, providing an almost spiritual and physically demanding experience for even the most extreme chillihead. |
Plant Size | The Sara Rangoon Trinidad Scorpion Long x Carolina Reaper plant is a vigorous and often large, sprawling grower, typically reaching a height of 90-130 cm (36-52 inches). It develops a sturdy main stem and numerous lateral branches, often benefiting from substantial staking or support due to its impressive productivity and the weight of its abundant, heavy fruit. |
Pod Size |
The pods are visually spectacular and intimidating. They ripen from a light green to a vibrant, glossy deep red when fully mature, often with a slightly mottled or striated appearance. They are generally large and notably variable in shape, combining traits from both parents: measuring typically 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in length and about 2.5-4 cm (1-1.6 inches) in diameter. They often exhibit the intensely wrinkled, gnarled surface of a Reaper, frequently feature a pronounced "scorpion's tail," and can also display the elongated characteristics of the Sara Rangoon Long parent. Each pod is a unique testament to its hybrid vigour. |
Flavour | Beyond its brutal, world-class heat, this hybrid offers an incredibly complex and highly desirable flavour profile. It combines the fruity sweetness and tropical notes from its Scorpion lineage (hints of apricot, cherry, or passionfruit) with the distinctive earthy, slightly smoky undertones often found in the Carolina Reaper. This fusion creates a multi-layered taste experience that, for a fleeting moment, provides a fascinating contrast before the overwhelming capsaicin intensity takes over. Its robust and unique flavour makes it an exceptional, albeit extremely dangerous, ingredient for crafting mind-blowingly hot sauces, extreme chilli powders, or for use in microscopic quantities in culinary challenges where the goal is absolute maximum heat combined with a nuanced, rich taste. |
Sowing & Growing Conditions |
Starting seeds indoors is essential to ensure a long enough growing season. Sow seeds indoors approximately 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost, typically from late January to early March. Use a high-quality, well-draining seed-starting mix. Avoid using garden soil directly, as it can introduce diseases and impede drainage. Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep in individual small pots or seed trays. Consistent and relatively high temperatures are crucial for germination. Maintain a soil temperature range of 27-32°C. Keep the seed-starting mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Gentle watering with a spray bottle is advisable. Once seedlings emerge (which can take 2-4 weeks or longer for super-hot varieties), provide them with ample bright light. A sunny windowsill supplemented with grow lights is ideal to prevent weak, elongated growth. Before transplanting your seedlings outdoors, they need to be gradually acclimatized to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days. This "hardening off" process involves progressively exposing them to more sunlight, wind, and cooler temperatures. |
