The Moruga Scorpion UV is a highly specialised cultivar within the Capsicum chinense genus, the species responsible for the vast majority of the world's most extreme chilli peppers. Its lineage traces back to the legendary Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, which itself originated from the remote Moruga region of Trinidad and Tobago. The "UV" aspect of this particular strain is a genetic mutation or selective breeding outcome that often results in pods that display a subtle, almost iridescent glow under certain light conditions (sometimes even appearing as unique striations or colour variations that are more visible under UV light), or simply refers to a unique genetic characteristic that gives it a slightly different appearance or growing vigour than the standard Moruga. It represents the ongoing, cutting-edge development in the world of ultra-hot chillies

Scoville Rating/Heat Level Do not be deceived by any subtle glow – the Moruga Scorpion UV is an absolute titan of heat, carrying on the legacy of its notorious parent. It typically registers between 1,500,000 to over 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This places it firmly in the very top tier of the world's hottest chillies, often rivalling or even surpassing the heat of the Carolina Reaper. Expect an immediate, agonizing, and prolonged burn that quickly engulfs the entire palate and body, providing an almost spiritual experience for the truly dedicated chillihead. Due to its astonishing heat, extreme caution is non-negotiable. Always wear protective gloves and eyewear, and avoid any direct contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Use in incredibly small quantities and with the utmost respect. Not recommended for casual consumption.
Plant Size The Moruga Scorpion UV plant is a vigorous and often large, sprawling grower, typically reaching a height of 90-120 cm (36-48 inches). It develops a sturdy main stem and numerous lateral branches, often benefiting from substantial staking or support due to its impressive productivity and the weight of its substantial fruit.
Pod Size The pods are visually distinctive and incredibly appealing, despite their menacing nature. They ripen from a light green to a vibrant, glossy fiery red, often displaying subtle visual anomalies or a unique sheen that hints at its "UV" characteristic. They are generally large, measuring 4-7 cm (1.6-2.8 inches) in length and 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in diameter, exhibiting the highly irregular, gnarled, and deeply wrinkled surface characteristic of extreme super-hot C. chinense varieties. Many pods feature a pronounced "scorpion's tail" at the blossom end, a clear hallmark of the Scorpion lineage.
Flavour Moruga Scorpion UV offers a remarkably rich and complex flavour profile, highly prized among super-hot enthusiasts. It boasts a distinct fruity sweetness with prominent tropical notes, often described as having hints of apricot, passionfruit, or citrus. This initial burst of flavour provides a fantastic, albeit fleeting, counterpoint to the intense, building heat. Its robust and distinct flavour makes it an exceptional ingredient for crafting mind-blowingly hot sauces, extreme chilli powders, or for use in very minute quantities in BBQ rubs, exotic fruit salsas, or any dish where maximum heat with a complex, sweet, and aromatic flavour profile is desired.
Growing Conditions

Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow seeds ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep.  Sow seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost date. Optimal soil temperature: 26–32°C (80–90°F); using a heat mat is strongly recommended for Capsicum chinense varieties.  Maintain high humidity by covering trays with a plastic dome or plastic wrap.  Provide 12–16 hours of light per day, ideally with grow lights.  Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have 4–6 true leaves and nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 15°C (59°F). Harden plants off for 7–10 days before moving them outside.  Space plants 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) apart in rows 70–90 cm (28–36 inches) apart.  Feed every 3–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or switch to a high-potassium fertilizer once plants begin to flower and set fruit.

All plants are grown on our farm in Norfolk, UK and are grown in an open pollinated area.
