Consuming a chilli pepper as hot as the Carolina Reaper can be a disorienting experience — one may experience a sensation similar to sticking their tongue in a deep-fryer, with heat radiating painfully to the ears. In some cases, this extreme heat has been known to cause hallucinations. One should take caution as the Carolina Reaper can cause lasting numbness of the taste buds along with severe stomach cramps if not enough food is consumed simultaneously.

The Carolina Reaper HP22B was given the Guinness World Record due to its remarkable spiciness, reaching a Scoville Heat Unit of 1.5 million, thus firmly establishing its status as the World's Hottest Pepper. This pepper is a hybrid of the Habanero and Naga Viper peppers, both of the Capsicum chinense family.

The Carolina Reaper plant has been known to reach heights of over one meter when grown in a container, potentially reaching even greater heights if planted directly in the ground. Its pods, developed through hybridisation, will usually be around 3-4 cm in width and length and transition from light green to a vivid red hue, rounded off with a signature pointed tail.

This chilli pepper has a painfully high level of heat, making it ideal for those looking to make a particularly intense chilli sauce or powder. It should be handled with caution, as its heat level could easily overwhelm the flavours of the dish.

Use two pairs of gloves when you chop hot pepper and be careful not to get any chilli in your eyes.

Growing Info

Begin growing in a heated environment, providing plentiful moisture and consistent warmth. Ensure eye protection and gloves are worn when handling the fruit or seeds and operate in a well-ventilated area. As plants mature, they can grow up to 1.5m in height, so adequate space is essential. Germination may also take considerable time.

Cooking & Eating

Experiment with creating hot jams, chilli powders, or even Carolina Reaper vodka using caution; this pepper's heat level is incredibly intense and can be overwhelming.
